چکیده

The steady motion of a symmetric, finite core size, counterrotating vortex pair is characterized by circulation r, a velocity V, and a spacing 2xooo In the classical limit of a point vortex, the normalized velocity, vx~/r, is 1/(41T). The effect of finite core size is to reduce the normalized velocity below the value for a point vortex. The flow is governed by a single geometrical parameter R/xoo , the ratio of effective vortex size to vortex half-spacing. Perturbation analysis is used to derive general, closed-form analytical solutions for the complete velocity field, the vortex pair velocity, and the boundary shape for a continuum of values of R/xoo. Both uniform and piecewise constant density cases are treated. These solutions illustrate the different orders at which the solution deviates from the point vortex pair. For example, the vortex shape becomes noncircular at order (R/xoo)2, but the normalized velocity does not change until order (R/xoo)5. For the uniform density case, calculation of specific values of vortex pair velocity, aspect ratio, and gap ratio shows good agreement with previous numerical results.

Multipolar vortices and algebraic curves

This paper demonstrates that analytical solutions to the steady two-dimensional Euler equations possessing all the qualitative properties of multipolar vortices observed experimentally and numerically can be constructed using the theory of algebraic curves and quadrature domains. The solutions consist of a finite set of line vortices superposed on finite-area patches of uniform vorticity. By wa...

Pattern Formation and Bistability in Flow between Counterrotating Cylinders

In the Taylor-Couette experiment on fluid flow between counterrotating cylinders, there is a bicritical point where the onset of instabilities to Taylor vortex flow (a steady-state bifurcation) and spiral vortex flow (a Hopf bifurcation) meet. The nonlinear mode interactions near this bicritical point are analyzed, exploiting the role of symmetry in the bifurcation theory. and with emphasis on ...

Thermal Field Around a Circular Cylinder with Periodic Vortex Shedding

A numerical study is carried out to investigate the laminar forced convection heat transfer from a circular cylinder. The fluid is assumed to be incompressible, the Reynolds number ranged from 0.1 to 1000, and the Prandtl number was equal to 0.7. The range of study includes heat transfer in creeping flow (Re40). The equations were discretized by a control-volume-based finite difference techniqu...

The onset of chaos in vortex sheet flow

Regularized point-vortex simulations are presented for vortex sheet motion in planar and axisymmetric flow. The sheet forms a vortex pair in the planar case and a vortex ring in the axisymmetric case. Initially the sheet rolls up into a smooth spiral, but irregular small-scale features develop later in time: gaps and folds appear in the spiral core and a thin wake is shed behind the vortex ring...

Vortex phase qubit: generating arbitrary, counterrotating, coherent superpositions in Bose-Einstein condensates via optical angular momentum beams.

We propose a scheme for the generation of arbitrary coherent superpositions of vortex states in Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) using the orbital-angular-momentum states of light. We devise a scheme to generate coherent superpositions of two such counterrotating states of light using well-known experimental techniques. We show that a specially designed Raman scheme allows for transfer of the op...
