چکیده
Poore and Thang found that a great deal has been achieved – perhaps more than most expected (see pages 5–6). Advances in policy have been made: the report finds, for example, that “significant progress has been made in policy and legislative reform in almost all producer countries in all three continents”. Most countries have been able to establish a permanent forest estate and have increased the area of forest lands dedicated to conservation, soil and water protection and other environmental purposes. Many new initiatives in participatory forestry are offering local people the chance to help determine how the resource is managed. And while implementation in the forest is still largely lacking, six countries “appear to be managing some of their forests sustainably at the forest management unit level”.

متن کاملHITS' Graph-based System at the NTCIR-9 Cross-lingual Link Discovery Task
This paper presents HITS’ system for the NTCIR-9 crosslingual link discovery task. We solve the task in three stages: (1) anchor identification and ambiguity reduction, (2) graphbased disambiguation combining different relatedness measures as edge weights for a maximum edge weighted clique algorithm, and (3) supervised relevance ranking. In the fileto-file evaluation with Wikipedia ground-truth...
متن کاملFetal rhythm-based language discrimination: a biomagnetometry study.
Using fetal biomagnetometry, this study measured changes in fetal heart rate to assess discrimination of two rhythmically different languages (English and Japanese). Two-minute passages in English and Japanese were read by the same female bilingual speaker. Twenty-four mother-fetus pairs (mean gestational age=35.5 weeks) participated. Fetal magnetocardiography was recorded while the participant...
متن کاملEnglish Language Proficiency and Early School Attainment Among Children Learning English as an Additional Language
Children learning English as an additional language (EAL) often experience lower academic attainment than monolingual peers. In this study, teachers provided ratings of English language proficiency and social, emotional, and behavioral functioning for 782 children with EAL and 6,485 monolingual children in reception year (ages 4-5). Academic attainment was assessed in reception and Year 2 (ages...
متن کاملA Cursor Control Based Chinese-English Brain-Computer Interface Speller
In this work, we developed a Chinese-English brain-computer interface speller based on 2-D cursor control. We built the English speller by integrated a motor imagery based 2-D cursor control strategy with a three-layer interface and combined the Pinyin input method with English speller to input Chinese characters. The online experimental results demonstrated that three subjects achieved good pe...
متن کاملImitation interacts with one's second-language phonology but it does not operate cross-linguistically
This study explored effects of simultaneous use of late bilinguals’ languages on their second-language (L2) pronunciation. We tested (1) if bilinguals effectively inhibit the first language (L1) when simultaneously processing L1 and L2, (2) if bilinguals, like natives, imitate subphonemic variation, (3) if bilinguals’ imitation operates crosslinguistically, and (4) if imitation interacts with p...
