Ecological Robotics: Controlling Behavior with Optic Flow

چکیده
There is a close relationship between ecological psychology and behavior-based robotics. One point of intersection between these two fields is the investigation of control laws, specifically those based on optic flow. As a demonstration of this, we have implemented control laws (inspired by work on flies) that produce behaviors relevant to the game of tag, a form of predator-prey interaction. These behaviors include fixating the target, escaping, and chasing. A robot implementing these control laws was tested in a largely unmodified lab environment and achieved up to 70% hits during chases of a hand-held target.

Ecological Robotics: Controlling Behavior with Optical Flow
There are striking parallels between ecological psychology and new trends in robotics and computer vision, particularly regarding how agents interact with the environment. We present some ideas from ecological psychology, including control laws using optical flow, affordances and action modes, and describe our implementation of these concepts in a small mobile robot which can avoid obstacles an...

The lay view of a robot is a mechanical human, and thus robotics has always been inspired by attempts to emulate biology. In this Chapter, we extend this biological motivation from humans to animals more generally, but with a focus on the central nervous systems rather than the bodies of these creatures. In particular, we investigate the sensorimotor loop in the execution of sophisticated behav...

We test the hypothesis that: (1) Optic flow can be used to detect significant environmental features during locomotion in a biped, even given significant up and down movement and jarring of the robot during locomotion. (2) Reliable detection is only possible if a prediction of the expected optic flow field is made at each instance. This prediction should be driven by the phase of the robot's ga...
