Insect Neurobiology: How Small Brains Perform Complex Tasks
نویسنده
چکیده
A new study finds that bumblebees, like primates, can perform simple tasks that rely on rapid visual assessment, but unlike primates, require longer views for complex tasks. This suggests a fundamental difference in the way bees process visual information.

Studying sensorimotor integration in insects.
Sensorimotor integration is a field rich in theory backed by a large body of psychophysical evidence. Relating the underlying neural circuitry to these theories has, however, been more challenging. With a wide array of complex behaviors coordinated by their small brains, insects provide powerful model systems to study key features of sensorimotor integration at a mechanistic level. Insect neura...
متن کاملTarget detection in insects: optical, neural and behavioral optimizations
Motion vision provides important cues for many tasks. Flying insects, for example, may pursue small, fast moving targets for mating or feeding purposes, even when these are detected against self-generated optic flow. Since insects are small, with size-constrained eyes and brains, they have evolved to optimize their optical, neural and behavioral target visualization solutions. Indeed, even if e...
متن کاملOn the design of neural networks in the brain by genetic evolution.
Hypotheses are presented of what could be specified by genes to enable the different functional architectures of the neural networks found in the brain to be built during ontogenesis. It is suggested that for each class of neuron (e.g., hippocampal CA3 pyramidal cells) a small number of genes specify the generic properties of that neuron class (e.g., the number of neurons in the class, and the ...
متن کاملStudying small brains to understand the building blocks of cognition
Cognition encompasses a range of higher-order mental processes, such as attention, working memory, and model-based decision-making. These processes are thought to involve the dynamic interaction of multiple central brain regions. A mechanistic understanding of such computations requires not only monitoring and manipulating specific neural populations during behavior, but also knowing the connec...
متن کاملInsect visual perception: complex abilities of simple nervous systems.
Despite their relatively simple nervous systems, insects display a rich behavioural repertoire, in which vision plays a major role. In the past two years, much knowledge has been gained about how insects are capable of a variety of flexible, visually guided tasks that involve a high level of complexity. From long-range navigation to median-range orientation and close-up recognition, insects app...
