First Order Phase Transitions in Gravitational Collapse

چکیده
In recent numerical simulations of spherically symmetric gravitational collapse a new type of critical behaviour, dominated by a sphaleron solution, has been found. In contrast to the previously studied models, in this case there is a finite gap in the spectrum of black-hole masses which is reminiscent of a first order phase transition. We briefly summarize the essential features of this phase transition and describe the basic heuristic picture underlying the numerical phenomenology. 04.25.Dm, 04.40.-b, 04.70.Bw Typeset using REVTEX

Cosmological Gravitational Wave Background from Phase Transitions in Neutron Stars
It has recently been suggested that collapse of neutron stars induced by a phase transition to quark matter can be a considerable source of gravitational waves with kHz frequencies. We demonstrate that if about one percent of all neutron stars undergo this process, the resulting cosmological gravitational wave background would reach about 10 times the critical density. The background would peak...

We study a generalized model of self-avoiding trails, containing two different types of interaction (nearest-neighbour contacts and multiply visited sites), using computer simulations. This model contains various previously studied models as special cases. We find that the strong collapse transition induced by multiply-visited sites is a singular point in the phase diagram and corresponds to a ...
متن کاملGravitational Waves from Electroweak Phase Transitions
Gravitational waves are generated during first-order phase transitions, either by turbolence or by bubble collisions. If the transition takes place at temperatures of the order of the electroweak scale, the frequency of these gravitational waves is today just within the band of the planned space interferometer LISA. We present a detailed analysis of the production of gravitational waves during ...
متن کاملGravitational waves from phase transitions at the electroweak scale and beyond
If there was a first-order phase transition in the early universe, there should be an associated stochastic background of gravitational waves. In this paper, we point out that the characteristic frequency of the spectrum due to phase transitions which took place in the temperature range 100 GeV–107 GeV is precisely in the window that will be probed by the second generation of space-based interf...
متن کاملGravitational waves from the sound of a first order phase transition.
We report on the first three-dimensional numerical simulations of first-order phase transitions in the early Universe to include the cosmic fluid as well as the scalar field order parameter. We calculate the gravitational wave (GW) spectrum resulting from the nucleation, expansion, and collision of bubbles of the low-temperature phase, for phase transition strengths and bubble wall velocities c...
