چکیده
HCI is diverse, exciting, and expanding. Inevitably the HCI community pulls itself in different directions, sometimes with the result that some worthwhile research is under-valued. This paper explores the systemic issues, and makes some constructive suggestions.

Animal-Computer Interaction (ACI): Changing Perspective on HCI, Participation and Sustainability
In the spirit of this year’s conference theme ‘changing perspectives’, this paper invites the CHI community to glance at interaction design through the lense of Animal-Computer Interaction (ACI). In particular, I argue that such a perspective could have at least three benefits: strengthening HCI as a discipline; broadening participation in Interaction Design; and supporting CHI’s commitment to ...
متن کاملMaking HCI theory work: an analysis of the use of activity theory in HCI research
This paper reports a study of the use of activity theory in human–computer interaction (HCI) research. We analyse activity theory in HCI since its first appearance about 25 years ago. Through an analysis and meta-synthesis of 109 selected HCI activity theory papers, we created a taxonomy of 5 different ways of using activity theory: (1) analysing unique features, principles, and problematic asp...
متن کاملIs British HCI Important? A Topic-based Comparison with CHI
Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research encompasses an extremely rich and diverse set of communities, interest groups and disciplines. It has evolved and expanded rapidly as its researchers have embraced new challenges and developed new theories, methodologies and technologies. In such a complex, rapidly changing environment it can be difficult for new researchers to discern the differences b...

متن کاملWhy Gender Matters in CMC? Supporting Remote Trust and Performance in Diverse Gender Composition Groups Via IM
An important yet largely unexplored area in HCI is how gender affects trust development and performance in virtual settings. This proposed study aims to investigate whether providing social chat activities to collaborators in a social dilemma game before they collaborate via remote text chat can support trust development and performance among remote team members. This study will provide an unde...
