Titan’s atmospheric haze: the case for HCN incorporation

چکیده

It is suggested that the incorporation of HCN in Titan’s atmospheric haze may be an important process affecting the HCN profile and the C/N ratio in Titan’s haze. By introducing a loss to the haze term for HCN (i.e. a production term of “poly-HCN”) in the photochemical model of Lara et al. (1996), we have improved the model’s ability to simultaneously reproduce the observed HCN and C2 hydrocarbon profiles in Titan’s lower stratosphere. The loss rate of HCN by this process may be a few times 108 cm−2 s−1. The calculated C/N ratio in the haze, assuming that the haze is primarily produced from C6H2, C8H2 and “poly–HCN”, is approximately equal to 2, in agreement with the composition of laboratory tholin analogues.

Vertical profiles of HCN, HC3N, and C2H2 in Titan’s atmosphere derived from Cassini/CIRS data

Mid-infrared limb spectra in the range 600–1400 cm−1 taken with the Composite InfraRed Spectrometer (CIRS) on-board the Cassini spacecraft were used to determine vertical profiles of HCN, HC3N, C2H2, and temperature in Titan’s atmosphere. Both high (0.5 cm −1) and low (13.5 cm−1) spectral resolution data were used. The 0.5 cm−1 data gave profiles at four latitudes and the 13.5 cm−1 data gave al...

Temperature variations in Titan’s upper atmosphere: Impact on Cassini/Huygens

Temperature variations of Titan’s upper atmosphere due to the plasma interaction of the satellite with Saturn’s magnetosphere and Titan’s high altitude monomer haze particles can imply an offset of up to ±30 K from currently estimated model profiles. We incorporated these temperature uncertainties as an offset into the recently published Vervack et al. (2004) (Icarus, Vol. 170, 91–112) engineer...

Flight through Titan’s Atmosphere

We assembled spectral image datacubes of Titan in H-band (1.4131.808 μm), using adaptive optics on the 10-m W.M. Keck telescope, by stepping a spectrometer slit across Titan’s disk. We constructed images of Titan at each wavelength by ‘glueing’ the spectra together, producing 1400ultra-narrowband (~0.1nm) views of the satellite. With this method one can characterise Titan’s atmosphere over the ...

Chemical composition of Titan’s haze: Are PAHs present?

[1] Previous laboratory studies of haze aerosols analogous to those in Titan’s atmosphere have shown evidence of the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). If present, PAHs may provide a mechanism for both particle formation and nitrogen incorporation. We have conducted new experiments simulating Titan haze production using an Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS). The AMS allows us to...

Impact of aerosols present in Titan’s atmosphere on the CASSINI radar experiment

Simulations of Titan’s atmospheric transmission and surface reflectivity have been developed in order to estimate how Titan’s atmosphere and surface properties could affect performances of the Cassini radar experiment. In this paper we present a selection of models for Titan’s haze, vertical rain distribution, and surface composition implemented in our simulations. We collected dielectric const...
