چکیده

INTRODUCTION Although the role of viscoelasticity in muscle mechanics is well recognized, methods for measurement in situ are limited. Recent advances in elastography have made possible the imaging of viscoelastic moduli within individual muscles [1, 2]. We have investigated a new approach, supersonic shear imaging (SSI), which combines high frame-rate (5kHz) ultrasound with acoustic radiation force induction of shear plane waves transients [3]. The elastic moduli can then be deduced from the propagation of these waves, and the viscous moduli from their attenuation.

Quantifying the passive stretching response of human tibialis anterior muscle using shear wave elastography.

BACKGROUND Quantifying passive stretching responses of individual muscles helps the diagnosis of muscle disorders and aids the evaluation of surgical/rehabilitation treatments. Utilizing an animal model, we demonstrated that shear elastic modulus measured by supersonic shear wave elastography increases linearly with passive muscle force. This study aimed to use this state-of-the-art technology ...

Muscle shear elastic modulus measured using supersonic shear imaging is highly related to muscle activity level.

This pilot study was designed to determine whether the shear elastic modulus measured using supersonic shear imaging can be used to accurately estimate muscle activity level. Using direct visual feedback of torque, six healthy subjects were asked to perform two incremental isometric elbow flexions, consisting of linear torque ramps of 30 s from 0 to 40% of maximal voluntary contraction. Both el...

Quantitative Estimation of Muscle Shear Elastic Modulus of the Upper Trapezius with Supersonic Shear Imaging during Arm Positioning

Pain and tenderness of the upper trapezius are the major complaints among people with chronic neck and shoulder disorders. Hyper-activation and increased muscle tension of the upper trapezius during arm elevation will cause imbalance of the scapular muscle force and contribute to neck and shoulder disorders. Assessing the elasticity of the upper trapezius in different arm positions is therefore...

Using level set based inversion of arrival times to recover shear wave speed in transient elastography and supersonic imaging

Transient elastography and supersonic imaging are promising new techniques for characterizing the elasticity of soft tissues. Using this method, an ‘ultrafast imaging’ system (up to 10 000 frames s−1) follows in real time the propagation of a low-frequency shear wave. The displacement of the propagating shear wave is measured as a function of time and space. Here we develop a fast level set bas...

Assessment of the mechanical properties of the muscle-tendon unit by supersonic shear wave imaging elastography: a review

This review aimed to describe the state of the art in muscle-tendon unit (MTU) assessment by supersonic shear wave imaging (SSI) elastography in states of muscle contraction and stretching, during aging, and in response to injury and therapeutic interventions. A consensus exists that MTU elasticity increases during passive stretching or contraction, and decreases after static stretching, electr...
