چکیده

Using a nanomanipulation system contained within a scanning electron microscope we investigate the thermionic electron emission from multiwall carbon nanotubes. Peak emission currents of 65 nA are measured. The carbon nanotubes being grown at low temperature by the chemical vapor deposition method are defective with poor thermal conductivity. We believe it is crucial for the thermal conductivity to be poor in order to obtain significant thermionic emission from the carbon nanotubes. This allows for the carbon nanotube during electron emission to be at high temperatures, and thus give higher emission efficiencies. At the highest emission current levels we estimate the temperature of the nanotubes to be approximately 2900 K. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. [DOI: 10.1063/1.1790597]

Synthesis and thermionic emission properties of graphitic carbon nanofibres supported on Si wafers or carbon felt

Preparation procedures and thermionic emission properties of graphitic carbon nanofibres (GCNFs) supported on Si wafer or commercial carbon felt supports are reported. GCNF/native-oxide Si wafer, GCNF/oxidized Si wafer, GCNF/Ni-coated Si wafer and GCNF/carbon felt nanocomposites are obtained by growing GCNFs from growth catalyst nanoparticles supported on these supports. Narrow herringbone GCNF...

In-FEEP Thruster Ion Beam Neutralization with Thermionic and Field Emission Cathodes

Charge neutralization of an In-FEEP thruster was demonstrated with three different electron sources by zeroing the floating potential of the thruster and neutralizer system. The three cathodes used in the investigation include a mixed metal thermionic cathode, a carbon nanotube field emission cathode, and a Spindt-type Mo field emission array cathode. The field emission cathodes significantly i...

Tuning from thermionic emission to ohmic tunnel contacts via doping in Schottky-barrier nanotube transistors.

Electrical power >1 mW is dissipated in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube devices in a vacuum. After high-power treatment, devices exhibit lower on currents and intrinsic, ambipolar behavior with near-ideal thermionic emission from Schottky barriers of height one-half the band gap. Upon exposure to air, devices recover p-type behavior, with positive threshold and ohmic contacts. The ...

Breakdown of Richardson's Law in Electron Emission from Individual Self-Joule-Heated Carbon Nanotubes

Probing the validity of classical macroscopic physical laws at the nanoscale is important for nanoscience research. Herein, we report on experimental evidence that electron emission from individual hot carbon nanotubes (CNTs) heated by self-Joule-heating does not obey Richardson's law of thermionic emission. By using an in-situ multi-probe measurement technique, electron emission density (J) an...

Photo- and thermionic emission from potassium-intercalated carbon nanotube arrays

Carbon nanotubes CNTs are promising candidates to create new thermionicand photoemission materials. Intercalation of CNTs with alkali metals, such as potassium, greatly reduces their work functions, and the low electron scattering rates of small-diameter CNTs offer the possibility of efficient photoemission. This work uses a Nd:YAG YAG denotes yttrium aluminum garnet laser to irradiate singlean...
