چکیده

Social norms have a pervasive effect on our lives, affecting how and what we eat, how we dress, where and how we travel, our recreation, the way we work, and our participation in the society at large. Other social norms make constraints on the behavior of commercial companies and other institutions, affecting the way they do business, their treatment of employees, their treatment of the environment, and so on. As societies grow and become more diverse, the system of norms becomes correspondingly complex. This paper is an attempt to bring computational assistance to bear in managing and interacting with these normative systems. A prototype expert system is described that utilizes deontic rules for reasoning about normative constraints in organizations and other social systems. Applications to bureaucracies and electronic contracting systems are discussed. DX can be used to model regulations and policies in organizations, such as library regulations of universities, resource access policies, etc. Also, regulatory aspects in interorganizational systems, e.g. EDI, can be effectively modeled and managed by DX. Automated regulation and policy reasoning help manage normative rules and reduce complexity in their applications.

Automated Deduction for Deontic Logics: Laying the Foundations of Legal Expert Systems

ABSTRACT: Deontic logic can be used to formalise legal rules. The automation of reasoning in deontic logic can therefore be used as the basis of a legal expert system. In this paper we investigate the automation of deontic logic using tableau calculi for modal logics. The correspondance between the deontic and modal logics is outlined and the tableau for the modal logics used in the prover are ...

An Integrated Framework for Ought-to-be and Ought-to-do Constraints (Extended Abstract)

Deontic logic is the logic to reason about ideal and actual behaviour. Besides the traditional role as an underlying logic for law and ethics (for a survey see [MW]), in the realm of computer science, deontic logic has been proposed as a logic for the specification of legal expert systems [BMT87],[Sta80], authorization mechanisms [ML85], decision support systems [Kd.,88], [Lee88b],[Lee88a], dat...

Part I : THE ROLE OF DEONTIC LOGIC 12

12.1 INTRODUCTION Because of its origins in the analytic study of law and ethics, it is natural to expect that the earliest and most obvious applications of deontic logic in computer science should appear in the construction of what are sometimes calledìegal expert systems' |systems intended to support in the analysis of legal texts, in drawing consequences from them, and in applying them to ac...

On some inferences based on stratified forward chaining: An application to e-Government

This paper introduces first an expert system shell based on stratified forward chaining. The stratified forward chaining was proposed as a generalization for the inheritance networks with exception since it allows more than one antecedent in the premises part of a rule. Expert systems built with this tool are rule based and the user interface is web based. The practical use of this chaining is ...

Reasoning about Actions and Obligations in First-Order Logic

1. I n t r o d u c t i o n We shall describe a new way in which theories about the deontic status of actions can be represented in terms of the standard two-sorted first-order extensional predicate calculus. This approach towards the formal analysis of such theories has two attractive features: first, it stands in the long and venerable 'anti-intensional' or 'anti-modal' tradition in the logic ...
