Probabilistic Seismic Performance of Rocking-Foundation and Hinging-Column Bridges

چکیده
Many engineers are hesitant to specify rocking foundations for ordinary bridges because of the unsubstantiated notion that rocking bridges are more susceptible to instability than conventional fixed-base bridges. A parametric study using a finite element model including large deformation effects compares the performance and stability of stiff, flexible, tall, and short hinging-column and rocking-foundation systems. Eighty different ground motions, scaled using incremental dynamic analysis, were considered. Results show that, in a probabilistic sense, bridges with rocking foundations are more stable than bridges with hinging columns if their fundamental periods are the same and if base shear coefficients to initiate hinging or rocking mechanisms are the same. Maximum drifts are not much affected by changing between rocking and hinging mechanisms except near collapse, but residual drifts are smaller for rocking systems. The results also challenge the notion that rocking systems require a different design approach than hinging column systems. [DOI: 10.1193/1.4000093]

Effect of column-foundation connection stiffness on seismic performance of rocking steel braced frame
Residual drifts after severe earthquakes interrupt serviceability of buildings. Retrofitting of such buildings is in many cases very difficult and consumes lots of time and money. Recently, there are some attempts to develop the seismic design procedures to not only satisfy life safety criteria but also lead to more economical buildings. One of these modern methods of improving seismic performa...
متن کاملThe Effect of Compressive Strength Reduction of Column Section Expose due to Freezing-Thawing Cycles on the Seismic Performance of Bridges
One of the serious damages of tremendous earthquakes is the damage to bridges as the major components in an arterial road network, as relief operation is interrupted following cutting roads. Regardless of the magnitude and severity of an earthquake, other factors are also important in the strength and seismic performance of concrete bridges. Freezing-thawing cycles are among the factors, whi...

Many existing bridges were designed without adequate consideration of seismic risk. The full or partial collapse of even one major bridge in a city or community would have destroying results. There has been focuses on developing fragility-based seismic vulnerability of existing usual bridges in Iran or support decision making on seismic upgrade. This article focuses on developing performance b...
متن کاملEmploying Foundation Nonlinearity to Mitigate Seismic Demand in Superstructure
Because of difficulty in inspection and retrofit of foundation in comparison with other elements, the common design philosophy is to avoid any nonlinear deformation in the foundation. This paper shows that by employing controlled foundation nonlinearity, in predetermined sections with arrangements for inspection and retrofit, it is possible to reduce seismic demand on superstructure. Localizing...

Rocking isolation of structures is evolving as an alternative design concept in earthquake engineering. The present paper investigates the seismic performance of an actual overpass bridge of the Attiki Odos motorway (Athens, Greece), employing two different concepts of rocking isolation: (a) rocking of the piers on the foundation (rocking piers); and (b) rocking of the pier and foundation assem...
