A Study of Removal of Ethylbenzene and Xylene Using Biofilter
نویسنده
چکیده
In the present study, a laboratory scale corn-cob based biofilter inoculated with pseudomonas fluorescents (mtcc 9768) was used for investigating the degradation of ethylbenzene and m-xylene for a period of 60 days in two phases. for ethylbenzene maximum removal efficiency (re) was 72% at an inlet concentration of 4.26 gm -3 and for m-xylene re was 76% at an inlet concentration of 6.39 g m -3 at an ebrt of 59 seconds. maximum elimination capacity (ec) for ethylbenzene was 282.03 g m – 3 h – 1 at an inlet load of 368.52 g m – 3 h – 1 and for m-xylene maximum ec was 298.84 g m -3 h -1 at inlet load of 354.67 g m -3 h -1 .

Biodegradation of Benzene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylene Mixture in a Date Palm Tree Bark-based Upflow Biofilter
The performance of a date palm tree bark-based biofilter inoculated with mixed microbial consortia was investigated for the removal of a benzeneethylbenzene-xylene mixture at a total inlet loading rate range of 38.0 to 612.0 g/m·h. The influences of the inlet pollutant concentration and air flow rate were studied. The maximum elimination capacities attained for benzene, ethylbenzene, and toluen...
متن کاملBiofiltration of gasoline vapor by compost media.
Gasoline vapor was treated using a compost biofilter operated in upflow mode over 4 months. The gas velocity was 6 m/h, yielding an empty bed retention time (EBRT) of 10 min. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) and total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) removal efficiencies remained fairly stable approximately 15 days after biofilter start-up. The average removal efficiencies of TPH and...
متن کاملBiodegradation of BTEX in a fungal biofilter: influence of operational parameters, effect of shock-loads and substrate stratification.
The effect of relative humidity (RH: 30% to >95%) of a gas-phase mixture composed of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and para-, meta- and ortho-xylenes (BTEX), inlet concentrations (0.2-12.6 g m(-3)), and empty bed residence times (EBRTs) (48-144 s) was tested in a fungi-dominant biofilter. A maximum elimination capacity (EC(max)) of 244.2 gBTEX m(-3) h(-1) was achieved at a total inlet loading ...
متن کاملPhytoremediation of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene contaminated air by D. deremensis and O. microdasys plants
BACKGROUND People usually spent about 90% of their time indoors, which are probably more polluted than outside the buildings. High levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are known as causes of sick building syndrome. The present study was designed to determine the quantitative effects of some plants to improve the quality of the environmental air. RESULTS D. deremensis and O. microdasys ...
متن کاملMesophilic and thermophilic biotreatment of BTEX-polluted air in reactors.
This study compares the removal of a mixture of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and all three xylene isomers (BTEX) in mesophilic and thermophilic (50 degrees C) bioreactors. In the mesophilic reactor fungi became dominant after long-term operation, while bacteria dominated in the thermophilic unit. Microbial acclimation was achieved by exposing the biofilters to initial BTEX loads of 2-15 g m(...
