چکیده
S t u d y s e l e c t i o n Studies were selected if they were published in English; assessed the association between SEPs (initial cortical responses from median nerve stimulation—i.e., the N19 or N20 responses) and awakening from coma; and reported coma cause, age group studied, presence or absence of SEP responses, timing of SEPs, and coma outcomes. Study exclusion criteria included single case reports, case series with < 4 patients, and articles from non–peer-reviewed journals.

Predictive value of somatosensory evoked potentials for awakening from coma.
OBJECTIVES A systematic review of somatosensory evoked potentials performed early after onset of coma, to predict the likelihood of nonawakening. The pooled results were evaluated for rates of awakening, confidence intervals, and the possibility of rare exceptions. DATA SOURCES Forty-one articles reporting somatosensory evoked potentials in comatose patients and subsequent outcomes, from 1983...
متن کاملBrain function after resuscitation from cardiac arrest.
PURPOSE OF REVIEW In industrial countries the incidence of cardiac arrest is still increasing. Almost 80% of cardiac arrest survivors remains in coma for varying lengths of time and full cerebral recovery is still a rare event. After successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation, cerebral recirculation disturbances and complex metabolic postreflow derangements lead to death of vulnerable neurons wit...
متن کاملSensory evoked potentials and the search for the Holy Grail method to predict the outcome after hypoxic-ischemic coma.
C ischemia after cardiac arrest is one of the most common causes of coma in the United States. At one year after hypoxic-ischemic coma, 53% died, 32% remain in persistent vegetative state (PVS) and only 32% have displayed some evidence of cognition.1 The search for a reliable method to confidently predict outcome post cardiac arrest is crucial for early decisions surrounding continued life supp...
متن کاملPredicting outcome from subacute unresponsive wakefulness syndrome or vegetative state.
Predicting recovery of consciousness in patients who survive their coma but evolve to a vegetative state (recently coined unresponsive wakefulness syndrome) remains a challenge. Most previous prognostic studies have focused on the acute coma phase. A novel outcome scale (combining behavioural, aetiology, electroencephalographic, sleep electroencephalographic and somatosensory evoked potential d...
متن کاملSomatosensory and Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials Assessed between 4 and 7 Days after Severe Stroke Onset Predict Unfavorable Outcome
Our objective was to explore the best predictive timing of short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SLSEP) and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) for unfavorable outcomes in patients with early stage severe stroke. One hundred fifty-six patients with acute severe supratentorial stroke were monitored according to SLSEP, BAEP, and the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) at 1-3 days and 4-7 da...
