چکیده

Margaret Gilbert explores the phenomenon referred to in everyday ascriptions of beliefs to groups. She refers to this type of phenomenon as “collective belief” and calls the types of groups that are the bearers of such beliefs “plural subjects”. I argue that the attitudes that groups adopt that Gilbert refers to as “collective beliefs” are not a species of belief in an important and central sense, but rather a species of acceptance. Unlike proper beliefs, a collective belief is adopted by a group as a means to realizing the group’s goals. Unless we recognize that this phenomenon is a species of acceptance, plural subjects will seem prone to change their “beliefs” for irrelevant reasons, and thus frequently appear to act in an irrational manner. Margaret Gilbert explores the phenomenon referred to in everyday ascriptions of beliefs to groups. She refers to this type of phenomenon as “collective belief“ and calls the types of communities that are the bearers of such beliefs “plural subjects”. In this paper, I argue that the attitudes that groups adopt that Gilbert refers to as “collective beliefs” are not a species of belief, but rather a species of acceptance. Unlike proper beliefs, a collective belief is adopted by a group as a means to realizing the group’s goals. Unless we recognize that the phenomenon that concerns Gilbert is a species of acceptance, plural subjects will seem prone to change their views for irrelevant reasons, and thus frequently appear to act in an irrational manner. When we recognize that plural subjects accept views rather than believe them, we will realize that some considerations that would be irrelevant to determining what an individual should believe are relevant to determining what a group should accept.

Belief versus Acceptance

Belief seems to be connected to truth and to the acceptance of the content of belief as true. If a person accepts as true that the cat is on the mat, then it might seem that he must also believe that the cat is on the mat, and conversely. However, the connections here should be investigated in terms that are more precise and should be properly argued for. This is my main aim in this paper. I wi...

Shared Belief

The importance of the notion of shared belief has been emphasized by philosophers, economists, sociologists, and psychologists at least since the 1960’s (the earlier contributors include Schelling 1960, Scheff 1967, Lewis 1969, and Schiffer 1972). This article deals with the strongest kind of shared belief to be called mutual belief. While a belief can be shared in the trivial sense of two or m...

What Are Collective Goals?

We distinguish between a collective’s goal and a collective goal, concentrating on the latter. Its relations to collective intention and action are spelled out. It is shown how a given goal, when additional predicates are ascribed to it, yields collective goals of increasing complexity. Our main task is to answer the question, “What makes a goal collective?” To this end, we will deal with the n...
