Spirochetes in Body Fluids and Tissues
نویسنده
چکیده
In the 1960's, it was demonstrated that Treponema pallidum can persist in the lymph nodes of patients with penicillin-treated late syphilis, and that the organism can be found in aqueous humor and spinal fluid in cases of late seronegative lues as well. Research in this field obviously requires acceptable standard methods. Following a workshop on the subject held at the Center for Disease Control in 1969, a six-member committee consisting of microbiologists, serologists, and ophthalmolgists was appointed to recommend: (a) standardized procedures for experimental treponematoses; (b) standard diagnostic methods for the demonstration of T. pallidum in the eye, spinal fluid, and tissues; and (c) guidelines for the interpretation of serologic tests for syphilis (STS) in man and experimental animals. The authors (J. N. Miller, V. H. Falcone, B. Golden, C. W. Israel, U. S. G. Kuhn, and R. M. Smibert) have fulfilled their task admirably well. The book is a valuable help not only to those working with experimental T. pallidum infections but also for those interested in interpretation and limitations of STS and in the demonstration of T. pallidum in tissues. Reference laboratories and companies supplying reagents are listed as well. The book fills a need at a time when syphilitic infections are again becoming a major concern in research and practical medicine.

Persistence of Borrelia burgdorferi following antibiotic treatment in mice.
The effectiveness of antibiotic treatment was examined in a mouse model of Lyme borreliosis. Mice were treated with ceftriaxone or saline solution for 1 month, commencing during the early (3 weeks) or chronic (4 months) stages of infection with Borrelia burgdorferi. Tissues from mice were tested for infection by culture, PCR, xenodiagnosis, and transplantation of allografts at 1 and 3 months af...
متن کاملA Disconnect between the Neurospirochetoses in Humans and Rodent Models of Disease
The human spirochetal diseases share many clinical similarities despite their diverse epidemiology. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection, whereas the leptospiroses and the borrelioses are zoonoses. The clinical similarities among the spirochetoses include a relapsing-remitting course of infection. The recurrent pattern of illness has three invariant features that are shared by all human...
متن کاملLyme Borreliosis: Is there a preexisting (natural) variation in antimicrobial susceptibility among Borrelia burgdorferi strains?
The development of antibiotics changed the world of medicine and has saved countless human and animal lives. Bacterial resistance/tolerance to antibiotics have spread silently across the world and has emerged as a major public health concern. The recent emergence of pan-resistant bacteria can overcome virtually any antibiotic and poses a major problem for their successful control. Selection for...
متن کاملBorrelia burgdorferi migrates into joint capsules and causes an up-regulation of interleukin-8 in synovial membranes of dogs experimentally infected with ticks.
Twenty 6-week-old specific-pathogen-free beagles were infected with Borrelia burgdorferi by tick challenge, and five uninfected dogs served as controls. During the study, all dogs were monitored for infection, clinical signs, and antibody response against B. burgdorferi. During episodes of lameness or postmortem, synovial fluids from each dog were examined for volume, cell number, polymorphonuc...
متن کاملExplanation of Movement and Stasis of Body Fluids in Traditional Persian Medicine
Background and Objectives: One of the most commonly used concepts of Iranian Traditional Medicine (ITM) is movement and stasis of the body fluids, which has not yet been independently studied. In this article, ITM contents have been re-studied on this concept, and according to the dispersion of the content, classification and its therapeutic benefits have been mentioned. Methods: In this lib...
متن کاملPathogen-related oral spirochetes from dental plaque are invasive.
Spirochetes that share pathogen-restricted antigens with Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum have been identified in dental plaque and diseased gingival tissues, but it is not known whether these spirochetes possess virulence characteristics. In this study, plaque spirochetes were able to transmigrate a tissue barrier in vitro and were identified on the other side by using monoclonal antibodies ...
