چکیده

Mahoney, Robert P. (Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), and Mercedes R. Edwards. Fine structure of Thiobacillus thiooxidans. J. Bacteriol. 92: 487-495. 1966.-Thin section analysis of the chemosynthetic autotroph Thiobacillus thiooxidans revealed structures comparable to gram-negative heterotrophic bacteria. Although this species is unique in that it oxidizes elemental sulfur for energy, uses carbon dioxide as its sole source of carbon, and can withstand a pH of less than 1, thin sections revealed a profile of the cell envelope (cell wall and plasmalemma) similar to other gram-negative species which have more common physiological traits. The cell wall is composed of five layers with an overall width of approximately 200 A, and the plasmalemma appears as a conventional "unit membrane" with a width of about 85 A. Volutin granules and less-dense bodies of similar shape and size were frequently observed in close association with the nucleoplasm. The nature and function of these bodies are unknown at this time.

Keto acids as growth-limiting factors in autotrophic growth of Thiobacillus thiooxidans.

When the strictly autotrophic bacterium Thiobacillus thiooxidans was grown on sulfur, keto acids accumulated in the medium until they reached an inhibitory level at which growth ceased. Much greater growth was possible if these substances were continually dialyzed out of the medium.

Transfer of IncP Plasmids to Extremely Acidophilic Thiobacillus thiooxidans.

The broad-host-range IncP plasmids RP4, R68.45, RP1::Tn501, and and pUB307 were transferred directly to extremely acidophilic Thiobacillus thiooxidans from Escherichia coli by conjugation at frequencies of 10 to 10 per recipient. The ability of T. thiooxidans to receive and express the antibiotic resistance markers was examined. The plasmid RP4 was transferred back to E. coli from T. thiooxidan...

A simple medium modification for isolation, growth and enumeration of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans (syn. Thiobacillus thiooxidans) from water samples.

High concentrations of H(2)S in groundwater are commonly removed using Biological Trickling Filter (BTF) that contains high numbers of biofilm immobilized sulfur oxidizing bacteria (mainly Thiobacillus thiooxidans). BTF performance requires continuous monitoring of these bacteria at several sampling points. The Most Probable Number (MPN) technique is at the moment the method of choice to enumer...
