Solid state growth mechanisms for carbon nanotubes

چکیده

The mechanisms by which carbon nanotubes nucleate and grow remain poorly understood. This paper reviews the models which have been proposed to explain nanotube growth in the arc-evaporation and laser-vaporisation processes. Many of the early models assumed that growth is a gas phase phenomenon but there is growing experimental evidence that the formation of both multiwalled and single-walled tubes involves a solid state transformation. Heating rate also seems to be important in promoting nanotube growth. 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Growth of CNTs over Fe–Co/Nanometric TiO2 Catalyst by CVD: The Effects of Catalyst Composition and Growth Temperature

In this research carbon nanotubes were produced by chemical vapor deposition of acetylene over a mixture of iron and cobalt catalysts supported on nanometric TiO2 and the influences of two synthesis parameters: growth temperature and catalyst composition ratio on properties of end-product carbon nanotubes were investigated. The catalytic basis was prepared by wet impregnation ...

CVD growth of carbon nanostructures from zirconia: mechanisms and a method for enhancing yield.

By excluding metals from synthesis, growth of carbon nanostructures via unreduced oxide nanoparticle catalysts offers wide technological potential. We report new observations of the mechanisms underlying chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of fibrous carbon nanostructures from zirconia nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation reveals distinct differences in morpholog...

Controlling dissociative adsorption for effective growth of carbon nanotubes

Dissociative adsorption has been widely simplified as part of the vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) growth model. We found that the addition of specific carrier gases can critically modify the growth rate and growth density of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). These results were explained by dissociative adsorption of C2H2 molecules and a solid-core VLS growth model. Based on these integrated mechanis...

Heteroepitaxial Growth of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes from Boron Nitride

The growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with predefined structure is of great importance for both fundamental research and their practical applications. Traditionally, SWCNTs are grown from a metal catalyst with a vapor-liquid-solid mechanism, where the catalyst is in liquid state with fluctuating structures, and it is intrinsically unfavorable for the structure control of SWCNTs....

Electronic structure and chemical reactivity of carbon nanotubes: a chemist's view.

A qualitative description of the electronic structure of single-wall carbon nanotubes from a chemical perspective is presented using real-space orbital representations and traditional concepts of aromaticity, orbital symmetry and frontier orbitals. This unusual view of carbon nanotubes allows us to merge the solid-state physics description of band structures with the molecular orbitals framewor...
