An Equilibrium Problem for the Limiting Eigenvalue Distribution of Banded Toeplitz Matrices

چکیده
We study the limiting eigenvalue distribution of n×n banded Toeplitz matrices as n → ∞. From classical results of Schmidt-Spitzer and Hirschman it is known that the eigenvalues accumulate on a special curve in the complex plane and the normalized eigenvalue counting measure converges weakly to a measure on this curve as n → ∞. In this paper, we characterize the limiting measure in terms of an equilibrium problem. The limiting measure is one component of the unique vector of measures that minimes an energy functional defined on admissible vectors of measures. In addition, we show that each of the other components is the limiting measure of the normalized counting measure on certain generalized eigenvalues.

An Equilibrium Problem for the Limiting Eigenvalue Distribution of Rational Toeplitz Matrices
We consider the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of Toeplitz matrices with rational symbol as the size of the matrix goes to infinity. Our main result is that the weak limit of the normalized eigenvalue counting measure is a particular component of the unique solution to a vector equilibrium problem. Moreover, we show that the other components describe the limiting behavior of certain gen...
متن کاملNon-Self-Adjoint Toeplitz Matrices Whose Principal Submatrices Have Real Spectrum
We introduce and investigate a class of complex semi-infinite banded Toeplitz matrices satisfying the condition that the spectra of their principal submatrices accumulate onto a real interval when the size of the submatrix grows to ∞. We prove that a banded Toeplitz matrix belongs to this class if and only if its symbol has real values on a Jordan curve located in C\{0}. Surprisingly, it turns ...
متن کاملThe Asymptotic Spectra of Banded Toeplitz and Quasi-Toeplitz Matrices
Toeplitz matrices occur in many mathematical as well as scientific and engineering investigations. This paper considers the spectra of banded Toeplitz and quasi-Toeplitz matrices with emphasis on non-normal matrices of arbitrarily large order and relatively small bandwidth. These are the type of matrices that appear in the investigation of stability and convergence of difference approximations ...
متن کاملInside the eigenvalues of certain Hermitian Toeplitz band matrices
While extreme eigenvalues of large Hermitian Toeplitz matrices have been studied in detail for a long time, much less is known about individual inner eigenvalues. This paper explores the behavior of the jth eigenvalue of an n-by-n banded Hermitian Toeplitz matrix as n goes to infinity and provides asymptotic formulas that are uniform in j for 1 ≤ j ≤ n. The real-valued generating function of th...
متن کاملEigenvalue Spacing Distribution for the Ensemble of Real Symmetric Toeplitz Matrices
Consider the ensemble of Real Symmetric Toeplitz Matrices, each entry iidrv from a fixed probability distribution p of mean 0, variance 1, and finite higher moments. The limiting spectral measure (the density of normalized eigenvalues) converges weakly to a new universal distribution with unbounded support, independent of p. This distribution’s moments are almost those of the Gaussian’s; the de...
