چکیده
The goal of the present paper is to study interference between French and English prosody. In order to study the influence of the prosody on the second language pronunciation, F0 slopes and vowel durations of the last syllables of prosodic groups were measured and analyzed in the pronunciation of French native speakers speaking French and English, and of English native speakers speaking English. Significant differences appear in our data between the use of F0 slopes by French speakers speaking English and the use of F0 slopes by English native speakers: most of the time, nonnative English production of F0 slopes is closer to French prosody than to English native prosody. For non-native (French speakers) vowel duration values are generally different from vowel durations in French data. However, they are somehow closer to values produced by English native speakers.

متن کاملReiterant speech as a test of non-native speakers' mastery of the timing of French.
The reiterant speech of ten native speakers of French was analyzed to develop baseline measures for syllable and consonant/vowel timing for a series of two-, three-, four-, and five-syllable French words spoken in isolation. Ten native speakers of English, who learned French as a second language, produced reiterant versions of both the French words and a comparable set of English words. The nat...
متن کاملComparing intonation of two varieties of French using normalized F0 values
Normalized F0 values measured from a specific prosodic domain (the Accentual Phrase, AP) are used in order to compare readings from four female speakers of two varieties of French: two Canadians (Quebec City area) and two French (Vendée area). Comparisons are based on APs with similar internal organization (contour, number of syllables, contourto-text timing) and identical position within an ut...

The difficulty for non-native speakers in producing Japanese geminate stops with a long enough closure has been pointed out and extensively studied. However, the reverse problem exists for particular language speakers such as Chinese. For these speakers, production of Japanese intervocalic single stops sound like geminate stops. This study aimed to show acoustic evidence of this problem in the ...

Acoustic measurements were made of the voice onset time (VaT) and vowel formants (F,-F)) in French and English words spoken by native French subjects who were highly experienced in English. and by three groups of native English subjects differing according to French-language experience. The speech of monolingual subjects was also examined to estimate the phonetic norms of French and English. It...
