Fog and live fuel moisture in coastal California shrublands

چکیده
9 Across most Mediterranean-type climate regions, seasonal drought desiccates plants, facilitating ignition 10 and the spread of wildfires. Along the California coast, summertime fog has the potential to ameliorate 11 drought conditions and thus reduce plant flammability during a critical time of elevated fire risk. This 12 study investigated the uptake of dry season fog and how it affects live fuel moisture in six dominant shrub 13 species from chaparral and sage scrub plant associations. Fog water uptake was evaluated using stable 14 isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen at several field sites in Santa Barbara County, California. Clear 15 evidence of fog water uptake was identified only in Baccharis pilularis, from the sage scrub association. 16 To determine the effects of fog on live fuel moisture, meteorological variables and indices including fog 17 deposition were combined into principal components and the scores regressed against the live fuel 18 moisture loss rate during the summer drought. Fog deposition slowed rates of live fuel moisture loss for 19 all three sage scrub species tested, but it did not affect the chaparral species. Fog is a more regular 20 occurrence in the sage scrub association and thus it is likely that fog ameliorates drought for species that 21 experience consistent fog during the summer months. In coastal California, summer fog can be essential 22 to plant water relations and reduce live fuel moisture loss rates during the summer drought. 23 Understanding these effects is important in the context of changing climate in southern California and 24 Mediterranean-type climate regions around the world. 25

Modelling long-term fire regimes of southern California shrublands
This paper explores the environmental factors that drive the southern California chaparral fire regime. Specifically, we examined the response of three fire regime metrics (fire size distributions, fire return interval maps, cumulative total area burned) to variations in the number of ignitions, the spatial pattern of ignitions, the number of Santa Ana wind events, and live fuel moisture, using...
متن کاملEstimating Live Fuel Moisture from MODIS Satellite Data for Wildfire Danger Assessment in Southern California USA
The goal of the research reported here is to assess the capability of satellite vegetation indices from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer onboard both Terra and Aqua satellites, in order to replicate live fuel moisture content of Southern California chaparral ecosystems. We compared seasonal and interannual characteristics of in-situ live fuel moisture with satellite vegetation ...
متن کاملAssessing the effect of foliar moisture on the spread rate of crown fires
This paper constitutes a digest and critique of the currently available information pertaining to the influence of live fuel or foliar moisture content (FMC) on the spread rate of crown fires in conifer forests and shrublands. We review and discuss the findings from laboratory experiments and field-based fire behaviour studies. Laboratory experimentation with single needles or leaves and small ...

Wildfire is one of the most significant forms of natural disturbance, impacting a wide range of ecosystems ranging from boreal forests to Mediterranean shrublands and tropical rainforest. One of the greatest uncertainties in assessing fire danger is our knowledge of fuels. Fuel properties vary at fine spatial scales, change depending on stand age and prior disturbance history and vary seasonall...
متن کاملPlant Community Water Use and Invasibility of Semi-arid Shrublands by Woody Species in Southern California
Soil moisture is a key limiting resource in arid and semi-arid environments for woody shrub species. We assessed if three arid communities differed in their level of dry season soil moisture content and if the dominant species in these communities differed in their ability to use soil moisture. Water potential of all of the dominant woody plant species occurring in chaparral, coastal sage, and ...
