چکیده

Dedication I would like to dedicate this thesis to the people closest to me. My mother's influence could only be equaled by a higher power. My father has grown to be a solid rock in my life. My uncle brought joy to my childhood and continues to be a close friend. My stepmother gave me guidance in the very basic and important aspects of life. My little brothers and sister have taught me how to love unconditionally. My aunt is full of humor and spirit. My close friends from childhood through graduate school have become like family. Thank you all for letting me be a part of your lives.

High-throughput on-chip in vivo neural regeneration studies usingfemtosecond laser nano-surgery and microfluidics

In recent years, the advantages of using small invertebrate animals as model systems for human disease have become increasingly apparent and have resulted in three Nobel Prizes in medicine or chemistry during the last six years for studies conducted on the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). The availability of a wide array of speciesspecific genetic techniques, along with the transpa...

A Fully Automated Microfluidic Femtosecond Laser Axotomy Platform for Nerve Regeneration Studies in C. elegans

Femtosecond laser nanosurgery has been widely accepted as an axonal injury model, enabling nerve regeneration studies in the small model organism, Caenorhabditis elegans. To overcome the time limitations of manual worm handling techniques, automation and new immobilization technologies must be adopted to improve throughput in these studies. While new microfluidic immobilization techniques have ...

Microfluidic Platforms for Whole-animal Screening with C. Elegans

This talk will present recent innovations pursued in Ben-Yakar research group towards developing microfluidic platforms and imaging modalities for whole-animal screening using C. elegans. Their small body size and survivability in liquid medium make C. elegans suitable for microfluidic manipulations. Their transparent body is ideal for in vivo optical manipulations such as precise laser axotomy...

Microfluidic system for on-chip high-throughput whole-animal sorting and screening at subcellular resolution.

We report a suite of key microfluidic devices for complex high-throughput whole-animal genetic and drug screens. We demonstrate a high-speed microfluidic sorter that can isolate and immobilize Caenorhabditis elegans in a well defined geometry for screening phenotypic features at subcellular resolution in physiologically active animals. We show an integrated chip containing individually addressa...

Microfluidics for the analysis of behavior, nerve regeneration, and neural cell biology in C. elegans.

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is a widely adopted model organism for studying various neurobiological processes at the molecular and cellular level in vivo. With a small, flexible, and continuously moving body, the manipulation of C. elegans becomes a challenging task. In this review, we highlight recent advances in microfluidic technologies for the manipulation of C. elegans. These new f...
