چکیده

An understanding of the interaction between the channel and the signal space is key to reliable communication. Multipath fading channels exhibit inherent diversity that can be exploited via appropriate signaling and reception. In this paper, we develop a virtual MIMO framework for code division multiple access (CDMA) systems for maximally exploiting channel diversity at both the transmitter and receiver. At the heart of the framework are MIMO system representations with respect to appropriately chosen basis functions for the signal space. The framework unifies many existing systems and suggests new transceiver structures for bandwidth-efficient communication. For any transceiver structure, the framework clearly reveals the two key factors that affect system performance: the number of parallel channels created by the signaling scheme and the level of diversity associated with each parallel channel. The framework also makes it possible to derive closed-form expressions for ergodic and outage capacity for a variety of transceivers. We present a transceiver that has a simple capacity expression and whose outage capacity performance bounds that of the multipath channel. We also present a simple transceiver for transforming the temporal multipath channel into a virtual multiple antenna array system to which recently developed spacetime codes can be directly applied.

Bandwidth-eecient Exploitation of the Degrees of Freedom in a Multipath Fading Channel

| Multipath propagation eeects encountered in mobile wireless channels provide additional degrees of freedom that can be exploited via appropriate signaling and reception. In this paper, we propose a framework for spread-spectrum signaling and reception that allows manipulating these inherent degrees of freedom for maximum bandwidth eeciency. We present a simple approach for transforming a mult...

Single-Carrier Frequency-Domain Equalization for Orthogonal STBC over Frequency-Selective MIMO-PLC channels

In this paper we propose a new space diversity scheme for broadband PLC systems using orthogonal space-time block coding (OSTBC) transmission combined with single-carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE). To apply this diversity technique to PLC channels, we first propose a new technique for combining SC-FDE with OSTBCs applicable to all dispersive multipath channels impaired by impulsive...

Multicarrier Block-Spread CDMA for Broadband Cellular Downlink

Effective suppression of multiuser interference (MUI) and mitigation of frequency-selective fading effects within the complexity constraints of the mobile constitute major challenges for broadband cellular downlink transceiver design. Existing wideband direct-sequence (DS) code division multiple access (CDMA) transceivers suppress MUI statistically by restoring the orthogonality among users at ...

Bit Error Performance for Asynchronous Ds Cdma Systems Over Multipath Rayleigh Fading Channels (RESEARCH NOTE)

In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the use of CDMA in mobile communications. Bit error rate is one of the most important parameters in the evaluation of CDMA systems. In this paper, we develop a technique to find an accurate approximation to the probability of bit error for asynchronous direct–sequence code division multiple–access (DS/CDMA) systems by modeling the multipl...
