چکیده

We present initial results of an ongoing search for interferometric calibrators at submillimeter (sub-mm) wavelengths with the Submillimeter Array (SMA). Powerful radio galaxies are commonly used as calibrators at centimeter and millimeter wavelengths, but many are not strong enough to serve as calibrators at sub-mm wavelengths because of their rapidly declining flux densities toward shorter wavelengths. The inability to find a calibrator close to the target source may limit or even prevent us from imaging many interesting sources at sub-mm wavelengths. Here, we investigate whether high-mass protostellar objects and ultracompact H II regions can serve as useful calibrators for the SMA. The dust emission associated with these objects makes them among the brightest sub-mm sources in the sky. Our observations at 0.85 mm (345 GHz) with an angular resolution of ∼3 reveal that although a large fraction of the dust emission originates from an extended “halo” component, a compact unresolved component often remains that when sufficiently strong may serve as a useful calibrator. These observations also provide a first glimpse at the small-scale distribution of dust around ultracompact H II regions and high-mass protostellar objects at submm wavelengths. We discuss the origin of the core-halo structure seen in many sources, and conclude with suggestions for future searches for calibrators with the SMA. Mass Star Formation II : The Mass Function of Submillimeter Clumps in M 17

We have mapped a ∼ 5.5×5.5 pc portion of the M17 massive star-forming region in both 850 and 450 μm dust continuum emission using the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The maps reveal more than 100 dusty clumps with deconvolved linear sizes of ∼0.05–0.2 pc and masses of ∼0.8–120 M⊙, most of which are not associated with known mid-infr...

Subarcsecond Imaging of the High-mass Star Forming Region Onsala

We report subarcsecond images of the high-mass star forming region Onsala 1 (ON 1) made with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) at 0.85 mm and the Very Large Array at 1.3 cm and 3.6 cm. ON 1 is one of the smallest ultracompact H II regions in the Galaxy and exhibits various star formation signposts. With our VLA and SMA observations, two new cm-wave sources and five sub-mm dust sources, respectively...

5 High Mass Star Formation I : The Mass Distribution of Submillimeter Clumps in NGC 7538

We present submillimeter continuum maps at 450 μm and 850 μm of a 12×8 region of the NGC 7538 high-mass star-forming region, made using the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We used an automated clump-finding algorithm to identify 67 clumps in the 450 μm image and 77 in the 850 μm image. Contrary to previous studies, we find a positive corre...

6 Massive Quiescent Cores in Orion . – II . Core Mass Function

We have surveyed submillimeter continuum emission from relatively quiescent regions in the Orion molecular cloud to determine how the core mass function in a high mass star forming region compares to the stellar initial mass function. Such studies are important for understanding the evolution of cores to stars, and for comparison to formation processes in high and low mass star forming regions....

Submillimeter spectroscopy of southern hot cores : NGC 6334 ( I ) and G 327 . 3 - 0 . 6

Context. High-mass star-forming regions are known to have a rich molecular spectrum from many species. Some of the very highly excited lines are emitted from very hot and dense gas close to the central object(s). Aims. The physics and chemistry of the inner cores of two high mass star forming regions, NGC6334(I) and G327.3-0.6, shall be characterized. Methods. Submillimeter line surveys with th...
