چکیده

Telecommunications are strategic assets for the design and operation of train control systems based on automatic train protection to prevent errors due to the human factor. The ERTMS/ETCS train control system developed in Europe is considered a world-wide de facto standard. It utilizes a dedicated telecommunication network based on the GSM-R system. This approach is not economically sustainable for low traffic lines due to the cost of building and monitoring the telecommunication infrastructure. This paper presents a novel approach based on a multi-bearer architecture by using existing public telecommunication networks such as cellular and satellite systems. Network availability can be improved by selecting an alternate network in order to guarantee the quality of the service required for the railways application. A procedure to evaluate the performance of a train control system using public networks is also presented. This paper also provides a contribution to the standardization process within the ERTMS/ETCS platform.

End-to-End Delay Model for Train Messaging over Public Land Mobile Networks

Modern train control systems rely on a dedicated radio network for train to ground communications. A number of possible alternatives have been analysed to adopt the European Rail Traffic Management System/European Train Control System (ERTMS/ETCS) control system on local/regional lines to improve transport capacity. Among them, a communication system based on public networks (cellular&satellite...

Towards Central Vulnerability Management by Mobile Phone Operators

The application of XML-based approaches in passing vulnerability information between vulnerability management devices or software residing on wired networks has been demonstrated. We propose a proof of concept framework for mobile operators that extends this use of XML into the area of vulnerability management on public land mobile networks. Our proposed framework allows for a pro-active centra...

Considerations for the Deployment of Communications for Commuter Railroad Positive Train Control Systems

The design of communications infrastructure, required to support mandated Positive Train Control systems, has not been given prominent attention with regard to and support of large-scale public rail systems in high density areas and heavily used rail corridors. Required Federal deployment timeframes have necessitated fast track strategies for all PTC systems one of which is communications techn...

Mobility Management in Next Generation Wireless Systems

This paper describes current and proposed protocols for mobility management for public land mobile network (PLMN)-based networks, mobile Internet protocol (IP), wireless asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), and satellite networks. The integration of these networks will be discussed in the context of the next evolutionary step of wireless communication networks. First, a review is provided of locat...

Regional Registration-Based Mobile Multicast Service Management in Mobile IP Networks

We propose and analyze a regional registration based mobile multicast service management scheme which we call URRMoM for efficiently supporting mobile multicast in Mobile IP networks. URRMoM extends the design concept of Remote Subscription (RS) by using mobile multicast agents (MMAs), each covering a number of MHs in its service area through tunneling multicast packets received from the multic...
