Intervention in Focus Pied-piping *

چکیده
In this paper we propose a new argument in support of the view that focus association involves covert focus movement with pied-piping, as proposed by Drubig (1994) and more recently supported by Krifka (2006) and Wagner (2006), and against the more prominent approach which does not involve movement (Rooth 1985, 1992). The evidence will come from an interaction between the interpretation of pied-piped constituents with focus intervention effects (Beck 2006). The two approaches to the syntax/semantics of focus make different predictions regarding where Roothian focus alternative computation will be used in the interpretation of the structure. In the in-situ interpretation approach (1a), focus alternative computation (indicated by a squiggly arrow) will be used over the full extent between the focused constituent and the focus operator only. In the covert movement approach (1b), focus alternative computation will only be used in a region near and above the focused constituent.

Covert pied-piping in English multiple wh-questions
In this paper we argue for the existence of covert pied-piping in wh-questions through a previously unnoticed pattern of intervention effects in superiorityobeying English multiple wh-questions. We show that the preference of covert pied-piping is for movement of larger constituents, unlike overt pied-piping. We argue that this discrepancy stems from conflicting requirements of PF and LF: overt...
متن کاملIntervention effects in relative pronoun pied-piping: experimental evidence∗
This paper contributes experimental evidence regarding the question of how relative pronouns are interpreted in English non-restrictive relative clauses with relative pronoun piedpiping (RPPP). Kotek and Erlewine (2015) and Erlewine and Kotek (to appear b) claim that the whrelative pronoun is sensitive to intervention effects inside its pied-piping constituent (cf Sauerland and Heck 2003, Cable...
متن کاملFeature Percolation, Movement and Cross-Linguistic Variation in Pied-Piping
This paper deals with cross-linguistic variation in WH-pied-piping. In this paper, I claim that pied-piping is the result of the intermediate stages of WH-movement (i.e., the indirect feature checking movement of Chomsky (1998)) to the Spec of XP and the subsequent percolation of the WH-feature to the XP and that cross-linguistic variation in pied-piping can be explained in terms of various uni...

LTAG Analysis for Pied-Piping and Stranding of wh-Phrases
In this paper we propose a syntactic and semantic analysis of complex questions. We consider questions involving pied piping and stranding and we propose elementary trees and semantic representations that allow to account for both constructions in a uniform way.
