چکیده

ion It is important that the proposed middleware be independent of proprietary solutions and specific platforms. The specification of ECA behavior should provide predictable rendering results across platforms with varied graphics and speech capabilities. Therefore, MECA should abstract itself from the multimodal technology used for character animation, speech synthesis, and input gathering. Special attention should be paid to what would be required for a standard targeting a greater base of applications. Application independent technology should be used for the implementation of such middleware. This will allow applications developed with MECA free to use or ignore the level of detail that is specific to the applications.

A Parameter-Based Model for Generating Culturally Adaptive Nonverbal Behaviors in Embodied Conversational Agents

The goal of this paper is to integrate culture as a computational term in embodied conversational agents by employing an empirical data-driven approach as well as a theoretical model-driven approach. We propose a parameter-based model that predicts nonverbal expressions appropriate for specific cultures. First, we introduce the Hofstede theory to describe socio-cultural characteristics of each ...

EMBR: A Realtime Engine for Virtual Human Animation

Embodied agents can be a highly engaging interface device and even be used as a versatile research tool for empirical communication studies. However, they require high effort and expertise for their creation, assembly and animation control. Therefore, open animation engines and high level control languages are required to make embodied agents accessible to researchers and developers. We present...

Multimodal Corpus Analysis as a Method for Ensuring Cultural Usability of Embodied Conversational Agents

In this paper we propose the method of multimodal corpus analysis to collect enough empirical data for modeling the behavior of embodied conversational agents. This is a prerequisite to ensure the usability of such complex interactive systems. So far, the development of embodied agents suffers from a lack of explicit usability methods. In most cases, the consideration of usability aspects is co...

Enhancements to Online Help: Adaptivity and Embodied Conversational Agents

We present and discuss the results of two empirical studies that aim at assessing the contributions, to the effectiveness and efficiency of online help of: adaptive-proactive user support (APH), multimodal (speech and graphics) messages (MH), and embodied conversational agents (ECAs). These three enhancements to online help were implemented using the Wizard of Oz technique. The first study (E1)...

Exploring Persuasive Potential of Embodied Conversational Agents Utilizing Synthetic Embodied Conversational Agents

This study presents synthetic embodied conversational agents, and how they can be used to explore the persuasive potential of real embodied conversational agents. Utilizing a novel Wizard-of-Oz style approach and a direct measure of behavior change we explore whether ‘ideal’ embodied conversational agents have a similar persuasive impact as real people, and demonstrate the importance of visuall...

Modelling Gaze Behaviour for Conversational Agents

In this paper we propose an eye gaze model for an embodied conversational agent that embeds information on communicative functions as well as on statistical information of gaze patterns. This latter information has been derived from the analytic studies of an annotated video-corpus of conversation dyads. We aim at generating different gaze behaviors to stimulate several personalized gaze habits...
