Preliminary Electromagnetic Simulations of Radar Scattering from the Lunar Surface as Applied to Mini-rf Observations

چکیده
Introduction: Bistatic radar measurements of the lunar surface are being carried out by the Mini-RF team using Arecibo as a transmitter, cf. Fig. 1. The resulting radar images – the first to be collected at non-zero bistatic phase angle β (between source and receiver) – are being studied extensively to test the hypothesis that water ice resides inside permanently shadowed and perhaps other very cold regions near the lunar poles. The present work uses electromagnetic simulations to model radar scattering from a Mini-RF lunar " pixel " (on the order of 20 m x 20 m) at wavelength 12.6 cm. We focus on understanding in high detail how properties of the far-field scattered radiation observed by Mini-RF changes with bistatic phase angle, surface roughness, and a plausible variety of inhomogeneous compositions, incl. buried or blocky water ice.

متن کاملSimulation of radar sounder echo from lunar surface layer and detection of lunar subsurface structure
In lunar exploration, spaceborne high frequency (HF) radar sounder is an effective tool for investigation of lunar subsurface structure in lunar exploration [1] [2]. The primary strategy for radar sounder detection of subsurface structure is through the time delay and intensity difference of the lunar surface and subsurface nadir echoes (Figure 1). It is important to fully understand electromag...

We present the first three-dimensional fully kinetic and electromagnetic simulations of the solar wind interaction with lunar crustal magnetic anomalies (LMAs). Using the implicit particle-in-cell code iPic3D, we confirm that LMAs may indeed be strong enough to stand off the solar wind from directly impacting the lunar surface forming a mini-magnetosphere, as suggested by spacecraft observation...
متن کاملAn upper limit for ice in Shackleton crater as revealed by LRO Mini-RF orbital radar
[1] Although diverse measurements have indicated H, OH , or H2O species in the lunar polar regions, pinpointing its location, form, and abundance in specific reservoirs has proven elusive. Here we report on the first orbital radar measurements of Shackleton crater near the lunar south pole. Mini-RF observations indicate a patchy, heterogeneous enhancement in CPR (circular polarization ratio) on...
متن کاملCompact Polarimetry at the Moon: The Mini-RF Radars
The Mini-RF radar aboard India’s lunar Chandrayaan-1 satellite [1] (2008-9) was the first polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) outside of Earth orbit. The architecture of that radar—and of its more advanced two-frequency sibling on NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter [2] (2009)—is hybrid dual-polarimetric [3][4]. This architecture is a form of compact polarimetry [5] in which the dual-re...
