Dufour’s Gland Composition in the Desert Ant Cataglyphis: Species Specificity and Population Differences

چکیده
D ufour’s gland secretion o f several species o f the desert ant C ataglyphis from different geo graphical localities was analyzed. The secretions constituted mostly o f alkanes ranging from undecane to nonadecane. Species specificity is expressed as variations in the major component as well as the relative intensities o f the additional constituents. Phylogenetically related species that are allopatric exhibited similar secretory composition whereas their sympatric counter parts had disparate composition, suggesting that character displacement occurred. Analyses o f colonies o f C. cursor from different localities also showed divergence in their glandular com position.

Mandibular Gland Secretions as Alarm Pheromones in Two Species of the Desert Ant Cataglyphis
Mandibular gland secretion o f two Cataglyphis species were chemically analyzed by combined gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The exudates produced by C. bom bycina consisted of citronellol and geraniol while that of C. nigra contained only geraniol. The reaction of both species to the glandular secretions was alarm and recruitment. While the reaction of C. bom bycina was strong, that of C....
متن کاملHeat shock protein synthesis and thermotolerance in Cataglyphis, an ant from the Sahara desert.
The ant Cataglyphis lives in the Sahara desert and is one of the most thermotolerant land animals known. It forages at body temperatures above 50 degrees C, and the critical thermal maxima are at 53.6 +/- 0.8 degrees C for Cataglyphis bombycina and 55.1 +/- 1.1 degrees C for Cataglyphis bicolor. The synthesis and accumulation of heat shock proteins (HSPs) were analyzed in Cataglyphis and compar...

†These authors have contributed equally to this work. The nesting habits of ants play an important role in structuring ant populations. They vary from monodomy, a colony occupies a single nest, via polydomy, a colony occupies multiple adjacent nests, to supercoloniality, a colony spans over large territories comprising dozen to thousands nests without having any boundaries. The population struc...
متن کاملGenetic determination of female castes in a hybridogenetic desert ant.
In most social insects, the brood is totipotent and environmental factors determine whether a female egg will develop into a reproductive queen or a functionally sterile worker. However, genetic factors have been shown to affect the female's caste fate in a few ant species. The desert ant Cataglyphis hispanica reproduces by social hybridogenesis. All populations are characterized by the coexist...
متن کاملSecretion of the Dufour Glands of Two African Desert Ants, Camponotus aegyptiacus and Cataglyphis savignyi (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)
-Dufour glands of minor workers of Camponotus aegyptiacus contain a mixture of linear and methyl branched hydrocarbons and a trace of dodecyl acetate. Major workers contain a similar mixture of hydrocarbons but also large quantities of dodecyl acetate, some other long chain acetates and traces of propionates and farnesyl acetate. Cataglyphis savignyi has pentadecane as the most abundant compoun...
