On the role of slab pull in the Cenozoic motion of the Pacific plate

چکیده
[1] We analyze the role of slab pull acting on the Pacific plate during its early Tertiary change in motion. Slab pull forces are estimated by integrating the negative buoyancy of a 700 km long slab along a revised subduction boundary model adopting the Müller et al. (2008) seafloor age reconstructions. Our results indicate that torques predicted from a simple slab pull model match the Pacific plate Euler vectors during the Tertiary fairly well. The change of the Pacific motion at 50–40 Ma appears to be driven by the onset of the Izu-Bonin-Mariana system and, soon afterwards, by the Tonga-Kermadec subduction zones. Citation: Faccenna, C., T. Pacific plate slab pull and intraplate deformation in the early Cenozoic
Large tectonic plates are known to be susceptible to internal deformation, leading to a range of phenomena including intraplate volcanism. However, the space and time dependence of intraplate deformation and its relationship with changing plate boundary configurations, subducting slab geometries, and absolute plate motion is poorly understood. We utilise a buoyancy-driven Stokes flow solver, BE...
متن کاملThe temporal evolution of plate driving forces: Importance of slab suction versus slab pull during the Cenozoic
[1] Although mantle slabs ultimately drive plate motions, the mechanism by which they do so remains unclear. A detached slab descending through the mantle will excite mantle flow that exerts shear tractions on the base of the surface plates. This ‘‘slab suction’’ force drives subducting and overriding plates symmetrically toward subduction zones. Alternatively, cold, strong slabs may effectivel...
متن کاملTrench motion-controlled slab morphology and stress variations: Implications for the isolated 2015 Bonin Islands deep earthquake
The subducted old and cold Pacific Plate beneath the young Philippine Sea Plate at the Izu-Bonin trench over the Cenozoic hosts regional deep earthquakes. We investigate slab morphology and stress regimes under different trench motion histories with mantle convection models. Viscosity, temperature, and deviatoric stress are inherently heterogeneous within the slab, which we link to the occurren...
متن کاملKinematics and dynamics of the East Pacific Rise linked to a stable, deep-mantle upwelling
Earth's tectonic plates are generally considered to be driven largely by negative buoyancy associated with subduction of oceanic lithosphere. In this context, mid-ocean ridges (MORs) are passive plate boundaries whose divergence accommodates flow driven by subduction of oceanic slabs at trenches. We show that over the past 80 million years (My), the East Pacific Rise (EPR), Earth's dominant MOR...
متن کاملGreat earthquakes and slab pull : interaction between seismic coupling and plate^slab coupling
Great earthquakes, the few largest earthquakes that account for most of the Earth’s seismic energy release, have occurred at only a few subduction zones around the world. Strong locking, or ‘seismic coupling’, of the interface between plates at certain subduction zones is often invoked to explain these great earthquakes. Although past studies have correlated strong seismic coupling with a compr...
