High-Energy Cosmic Rays and Neutrinos from Gamma-Ray Bursts

چکیده
— A complete model for the origin of high-energy ( > ∼ 10 14 eV) cosmic rays from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and implications of this hypothesis are described. Detection of high-energy neutrinos from GRBs provide an unambiguous test of the model. Evidence for cosmic-ray acceleration in GRBs is suggested by the detection of anomalous γ-ray components such as that observed from GRB 941017. Neutron β-decay halos around star-forming galaxies such as the Milky Way are formed as a consequence of this model. Cosmic rays from GRBs in the Galaxy are unlikely to account for the ∼ 10 eV cosmic-ray excess reported by the Sydney University Giant Air Shower Recorder (SUGAR), but could contribute to past extinction events.

TeV-PeV Neutrinos from Giant Flares of Magnetars and the Case of SGR 1806-20
We estimate the high energy neutrino flux from the giant flare of SGR 180620 on December 27, 2004, which irradiated Earth with a gamma-ray flux ∼ 10 times larger than the most luminous gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) ever detected. The Antarctic Cherenkov neutrino detector AMANDA was on-line during the flare, and may either have detected high energy neutrinos for the first time from a cosmic point sour...
متن کاملUltra-high energy cosmic rays, cascade γ-rays, and high-energy neutrinos from gamma-ray bursts
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are sources of energetic, highly variable fluxes of γ rays, which demonstrates that they are powerful particle accelerators. Besides relativistic electrons, GRBs should also accelerate high-energy hadrons, some of which could escape cooling to produce ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). Acceleration of high-energy hadrons in GRB blast waves will be established if hig...
متن کاملCooling of Accelerated Nucleons and Neutrino Emission in Gamma-Ray Bursts
Using Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate photopion production from Fermi-accelerated protons and the resulting neutrino production in gamma-ray bursts. Unless internal shocks occur at quite large distance from the center, ultra high-energy protons are depleted by photopion production and synchrotron radiation. Internal shocks at fiducial distance cause neutrino bursts, which accompany gamm...
متن کاملGamma Ray Bursts as Possible High Energy Sources
Gamma-ray bursts are known to be sources of high-energy γ rays, and are likely to be sources of high-energy cosmic rays and neutrinos. Following a short review of observations of GRBs at multi-MeV energies and above, the physics of leptonic and hadronic models of GRBs is summarized. Evidence for two components in BATSE and EGRET/TASC data suggest that GRBs are sources of high-energy cosmic rays...
متن کاملPrompt Gev-tev Emission of Gamma-ray Bursts Due to High-energy Protons, Muons and Electron-positron Pairs
In the framework of the internal shock scenario, we model the broadband prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with emphasis on the GeV-TeV bands, utilizing Monte Carlo simulations that include various processes associated with electrons and protons accelerated to high energies. While inverse Compton emission from primary electrons is often dominant, different proton-induced mechanisms can ...
