Germination and Initial Growth of Eastern Cottonwood as Influ- Enced
نویسندگان
چکیده
Germination energy of cottonwood seed decreased gradually as moisture stress increased from 0.0 to 10.0 atm; 15.0 atm inhibited germination except at 32 and 38 C. Temperature extremes of 15 and 38 C drastically reduced germination energy, and the reductive effect of 38 C was particularly marked after storage. Only 15-atm moisture stress or 15 C greatly reduced total germination. Germination under optimum conditions (27-32 C) was reduced from 90% to 69% by 12 months' storage. Little seedling growth took place at stresses above 5 atm and at temperatures of 15 and 38 C. Initial growth was related to seed size, which varied considerably with parent tree.

An Afforestation System for Restoring Bottomland Hardwood Forests: Biomass Accumulation of Nuttall Oak Seedlings Interplanted Beneath Eastern Cottonwood
Bottomland hardwood forests of the southeastern United States have declined in extent since European settlement. Forest restoration activities over the past decade, however, have driven recent changes in land use through an intensified afforestation effort on former agricultural land. This intense afforestation effort, particularly in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley, has generated a deman...

Current research on effect of increasing concentrations (0 (control), 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 mM) of different salts including NaCl and Na2SO4 on germination and initial growth phase of Halostachys caspica were studied. The experimental design was completely randomized design with three replications. Characters of percentage, speed and index of germination, seed healthy index, radicle, plumu...
متن کاملThe Effect of Gibberellic Acid and Chilling Stratification on Seed Germination of Eastern Black Walnut (Juglans nigra L.)
Eastern black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) is used as a rootstock for the Persian walnut (Juglans regia L.) in some parts of the world and also has an important role in forestry and wood industry. Due to the deep physiological dormancy, the seed often shows an inconsistent or low germination percentage, making establishment difficult. This experiment was carried out as a completely randomized desi...
متن کاملEffect of Glomus Spp. on the Growth of Eastern Cottonwood Cuttings
The rapid juvenile growth of eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides Bartr. ex Marsh.) makes it a desirable hardwood species for revegetation of disturbed sites. In addition, revegetation may be facilitated by improved root growth in response to endomycorrhizal colonization. An experiment was conducted to identify the effect of inoculation with a mix of three Glomus spp. isolates on the root grow...
متن کاملEffects of Fertilizer Nitrogen on Tree Growth, Foliar Nitrogen, and Herbage in Eastern Cottonwood Plantations I
When five rates of nitrogen fertilizer (0 to 672 kg! ha) were tested in two eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides Bartr. ) plantations 7 and 10 years old in the Mississippi River floodplain , first season volume growth was more than doubled by fertilization . By the end of the third season, the direct effect of fertilization had apparently disappeared although a volume advantage caused by the l...
