چکیده

The precision of soft tissue dissection with pulsed lasers in liquid media is typically limited by collateral damage from vapor bubbles created during energy deposition. We present an alternative technique for creating incisions using a pulsed liquid microjet driven by an electric discharge-induced vapor bubble generated inside a micronozzle. We use this technique to create a pulsed jet 30 mm in diameter with a peak velocity of 90 m/s and total ejected volume on the order of 100 pl. Incision tests on a polyacrylamide gel simulating soft tissue show that the width of the cut is comparable to the diameter of the micronozzle and that collateral damage is significantly less than that produced by a vapor bubble not confined by the nozzle. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1357452#

Intravascular drug delivery with a pulsed liquid microjet.

Occlusions of the retinal veins and arteries, associated with diseases such as hypertension and arteriosclerosis, are a major cause of severe and irreversible loss of vision. Treatments for retinal vascular diseases have been unsatisfactory owing in part to the difficulty of delivering drugs to the site of disease within the eye. In this article, we demonstrate that a new device, the vapor bubb...

Pulsed microjet control of supersonic impinging jets via low-frequency excitation

Several fluid flow problems related to propulsion and power generation exhibit strong acoustic resonances. Produced due to interactions of the acoustics with other underlying unsteady mechanisms such as unsteady heat release or shear flow instability, these resonances manifest as large and sustained pressure oscillations. Active control of such resonances has been shown to be highly effective, ...

Electrical alternative to pulsed fiber-delivered lasers in microsurgery

An electrical system based on a tapered microelectrode has been developed for generation of high voltage sub-microsecond discharge in physiological medium. Different types of the resulting pulses of current are investigated as well as the dynamics of the associated cavitation bubbles. A highly localized zone of power dissipation—about 20 mm in size—results in a low threshold energy of cavitatio...

Needle-free delivery of macromolecules across the skin by nanoliter-volume pulsed microjets.

Needle-free liquid jet injectors were invented >50 years ago for the delivery of proteins and vaccines. Despite their long history, needle-free liquid jet injectors are not commonly used as a result of frequent pain and bruising. We hypothesized that pain and bruising originate from the deep penetration of the jets and can potentially be addressed by minimizing the penetration depth of jets int...

Active Microfluidic Cooling of Integrated Circuits

The thermal management of high heat fluxes is a critical roadblock in the way of higher-performance microelectronics. The ongoing reduction in microtransistor size translates into heat fluxes comparable to those encountered in nuclear reactions and rocket nozzles, but under much severer temperature constraints. Although the average heat flux may remain in the vicinity of 100 to 300 W/cm, the pe...
