چکیده

A novel design technique for low-loss waveguide crossing using the self-imaging properties of multimode interference (MMI) structures is presented. The technique exploits the observation that optical fields with a small 1/e width relative to that of the MMI structure in the image reformed region experience negligible propagation loss even in the absence of lateral guiding mechanism around the region. This allows the introduction of a slab in the MMI region. The technique could also be used to design planar light-wave circuits with small wavelength-dependent loss which is important for DWDM devices. Using two-dimensional wide-angle BPM simulations, taper width technology and MMI structure technology is compared for low-loss slab propagation in orthogonal intersection. We also demonstrate that low-loss crossing waveguides with intersection angle as small as 23 can be achieved with the aid of MMI structures. 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ultralow-loss silicon waveguide crossing using Bloch modes in index-engineered cascaded multimode-interference couplers.

We investigate the loss mechanism in three-moded multimode-interference couplers that are the building blocks of a compact and low-loss waveguide crossing structure. Broadband silicon waveguide crossing arrays with <0.01  dB insertion loss per crossing are proposed using cascaded multimode-interference couplers, where lateral subwavelength nanostructures are used to reduce the insertions loss. ...

Taper-integrated multimode-interference based crossings for silicon wire waveguides

Novel multimode-interference (MMI)-based crossings integrated with miniaturized tapers are numerically presented for Silicon wire waveguides. These miniature tapers function as field expanders to reduce transition loss between the input/output waveguide and the MMI region and the crosstalk in the crossing section. As a consequence, the lengths of MMI sections reduce to less than twice of the be...

Optimizing Imbalance and Loss in 2 2 3-dB Multimode Interference Couplers via Access Waveguide Width

The imbalance and excess loss in multimode interference couplers with fabrication errors are examined. Remarkably, there exists a number of optimum access waveguide widths which give a minimum imbalance. Furthermore, quite low excess loss can be simultaneously achieved by choosing one particular optimum width. It is also shown that paired interference couplers have better imbalance performance ...

Ultra-low-loss CMOS-compatible waveguide crossing arrays based on multimode Bloch waves and imaginary coupling.

We experimentally demonstrate broadband waveguide crossing arrays showing ultralow loss of 0.0 4dB/crossing (0.9%) on average and converging to 0.033 dB/crossing (0.075%) matching theory and cross-talk suppression over 35 dB in a CMOS-compatible geometry. The principle of operation is the tailored excitation of a low-loss spatial Bloch wave formed by matching the periodicity of the crossing arr...

Compact and broadband polarization beam splitter based on a silicon nitride augmented low-index guiding structure.

We propose a compact polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on a silicon nitride enhanced silicon-on-insulator platform using an augmented low-index guiding (ALIG) waveguide structure. In the ALIG structure, the TM mode is mostly confined in the low-index silicon nitride, while the TE mode is confined in the high-index silicon. Since the two modes are confined in two separate layers, their prop...
