Does Income Measure Happiness?
نویسنده
چکیده
Is economic well-being is accurately captured by traditional economic measures like per-capita income? This has long been a contested issue. Although everyone concedes that income is an imperfect welfare measure, conservative economists have tended to emphasize its virtues, while liberals have been more likely to stress its shortcomings. This debate is not just of philosophical interest; it also has important policy implications. Recent research findings offer support for specific arguments made on both sides. Mounting evidence suggests, however, that per capita income becomes a much less informative index of economic welfare when income inequality has been rising rapidly, as in recent decades. First a few words about how economists measure income. The simplest approach might seem to be just to add up everyone's income. But because one person's spending is another person's income, we can also estimate income by adding up how much everyone spends. And because spending turns out to be easier to keep track of than income, the most commonly used income metric is Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the annual market value of all final goods and services produced within a country. Per capita GDP is simply GDP divided by total population.

Money Doesn’t Buy Happiness – or Does It? a Reassessment Based on the Combined Effects of Wealth, Income and Consumption*
The accepted view among psychologists and economists alike is that economic well-being has a statistically significant but only weak effect on happiness/subjective well-being (SWB). This view is based almost entirely on weak relationships between household income and SWB. But income is clearly an imperfect measure of economic well-being. Also needed are measures of wealth (net worth) and consum...

century utilitarians. Their thinking ultimately led to a justification of income maximisation as the measure of progress, equating income and utility. In contrast, the revived approach by neo-utilitarians intends to replace income as the objective by measures of happiness derived from surveys. This paper assesses happiness as the objective of development and measure of progress, contrasting it ...

متن کاملWEALTH AND HAPPINESS REVISITED Growing wealth of nations does go with greater happiness
Will raising the incomes of all increase the happiness of all?” Intuition says 'yes' but theories of relative utility caution that the answer may be ‘no’. The theory of relative utility holds that rises in income will produce at best short-lived gains in happiness. If people’s happiness depends on income relative to others (social comparisons), or on income relative to their own past income (ad...

This paper shows that within-country happiness inequality has fallen in the majority of countries that have experienced positive income growth over the last forty years, in particular in developed countries. This new stylized fact comes as an addition to the Easterlin paradox, which states that the time trend in average happiness is flat during episodes of long-run income growth. This mean-pres...
