The Loss of Hemolytic Capacity by a Fraction of a Culture of a Hemolytic Streptococcus without Change in Agglutination Characteristics
نویسندگان
چکیده
A culture of hemolytic streptococcus developed a non-hemolytic fraction which as determined by its agglutinogenic, agglutination, and agglutinin absorotion characters was identical with the hemolytic fraction, the only variation being one of function, or physiological action. This functional variation has proved permanent, as long as observed, for both fractions have continued to breed true. This study is offered as additional evidence in favor of the hypothesis that functional changes among bacteria are, at most, only very infrequently associated with changes in the antigenic matrix of bacteria.

The Loss of Hemolytic Capacity by a Fraction of a Culture of a Hemolytic Strepto- Coccus without Change in Agglu- Tination
on variations of streptococci as regards hemolysis and other characteristics, no complete and adequately controlled observations on the agglutination, agglutinin-binding, and agglutinogenic characteristics have been made, as far as we know, to determine whether variation in function has been associated with change in the antigenic constituents of the cocci. We are reporting, therefore, comparat...
متن کاملLoss of the Properties of Hemolysin and Pigment Formation without Change in Immunological Specificity in a Strain of Streptococcus Haemolyticus
1. A variant arising in a culture of hemolytic streptococcus was shown to have lost the properties of producing pigment and hemolyzing blood. Despite the loss of these two functions, it had in common with the strain from which it was derived certain other distinguishing biochemical characteristics, as follows: Both attained the same hydrogen ion concentration in dextrose broth; both hydrolyzed ...
متن کاملMultiple splenic infarctions in a dog with immune-mediated hemolytic anemia: therapeutic implications
Background: Splenic infarction (SI) is a rare clinical entity seldom encountered in veterinary medicine. Its most frequent causes include thromboembolic status, splenomegaly, and cardiac disease. Although thrombotic elements from the circulation provide the most common context for thromboembolic SIs, immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) has not been reported as an underlying...
متن کاملPurification and Characterization of an Antibacterial, Antifungal and Non Hemolytic Peptide from Rana Ridibunda
Amphibians have a large variety of antimicrobial peptides that serve as natural innate barriers limiting microbial infection or, in some instances, act as an integral component in response to inflammation or microbial infection. A novel peptide with antibacterial effects and without hemolytic activity was purified from skin secretions of Rana ridibunda by multisteps cation-exchange FPLC, revers...
متن کاملLeptospirosis and immune-mediated hemolytic anemia: A lethal association
Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is a common cause of anemia in dogs. The immune aggression towards erythrocytes can be triggered by many pathological conditions such as infection, inflammatory disease or neoplasia. Upon ruling out any eliciting conditions, a diagnosis of the primary immune-mediated disease can be made. In this particular case of severe anemia (tested positive for circul...
