Climate catastrophes

چکیده

Climate catastrophes, which many times occurred in the geological past, caused the extinction of large or small populations of animals and plants. Changes in the terrestrial and marine biota caused by the catastrophic climate changes undoubtedly resulted in considerable fluctuations in global carbon cycle and atmospheric gas composition. Primarily, carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas contents were affected. The study of these catastrophes allows a conclusion that climate Ž system is very sensitive to relatively small changes in climate-forcing factors transparency of the atmosphere, changes in . large glaciations, etc. . It is important to take this conclusion into account while estimating the possible consequences of now occurring anthropogenic warming caused by the increase in greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere. q 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Responding to Threats of Climate Change Mega-Catastrophes

There is a low but uncertain probability that climate change could trigger “mega-catastrophes,” severe and at least partly irreversible adverse effects across broad regions. This paper first discusses the state of current knowledge and the defining characteristics of potential climate change mega-catastrophes. While some of these characteristics present difficulties for using standard rational ...

On welfare frameworks and catastrophic climate risks

Recent theoretical work in the economics of climate change has suggested that climate policy is highly sensitive to ‘fat-tailed’ risks of catastrophic outcomes (Weitzman, 2009b). Such risks are suggested to be an inevitable consequence of scientific uncertainty about the effects of increased greenhouse gas concentrations on climate. Criticisms of this controversial result fall into three catego...

Stationary moments, diffusion limits, and extinction times for logistic growth with random catastrophes

A variety of organisms, from arctic reindeer to gastrointestinal bacteria, face stochastic environmental fluctuations that result in population catastrophes. Understanding the statistics of growthcatastrophe processes is a particularly relevant problem at present, due for example to expected increases in environmental volatility as a consequence of climate change and to growing interest in appl...

Insurability of Climate Risks

The IPCC 2007 report noted that both the frequency and strength of hurricanes, floods and droughts have increased during the past few years. Thus, climate risk, and more specifically natural catastrophes, are now hardly insurable: losses can be huge (and the actuarial pure premium might even be infinite), diversification through the central limit theorem is not possible because of geographical ...
