Iterative Optimization in Medical Imaging

چکیده

Medical imaging is a broad field and we shall focus here primarily on only two areas: x-ray transmission tomography (CAT-scans); and emission tomography (PET and SPECT scans). We use transmission tomography to illustrate the non-iterative filteredbackprojection (FBP) approach to imaging, and emission tomography, mainly singlephoton emission computed tomography (SPECT), to illustrate iterative methods. The topics we shall consider in this article are as follows: • 1. transmission tomography and non-iterative filtered backprojection; • 2. discretization and iterationART and MART; • 3. emission tomography and iterative likelihood maximization; • 4. the EMML algorithm for emission tomography; • 5. acceleration through block-iterative methods; • 6. iterative entropy maximization; • 7. the split feasibility problem and the CQ algorithm; • 8. intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).

Fast System Matrix Calculation in CT Iterative Reconstruction

Introduction: Iterative reconstruction techniques provide better image quality and have the potential for reconstructions with lower imaging dose than classical methods in computed tomography (CT). However, the computational speed is major concern for these iterative techniques. The system matrix calculation during the forward- and back projection is one of the most time- cons...

An iterative method to estimate x-ray attenuation coefficients in computed tomography

Introduction: The basis of image formation in Computed Tomography (CT) lies in the x-ray linear attenuation coefficient of the scanned material. Compton scattering and photoelectric effect are the dominant interactions of the x-ray photons with the subject, in the range of diagnostic radiology. These two coefficients are important in tissue characterization by Dual-Energy CT (D...

Artifact reduction techniques in Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging modality

Introduction: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was introduced and became more common based on its low cost, fast image procedure rate and low radiation dose compared to CT. This imaging modality improved diagnostic and treatment-planning procedures by providing three-dimensional information with greatly reduced level of radiation dose compared to 2D dental imaging modalitie...

Optimization of Acquisition Geometry for Intra-operative Tomographic Imaging

Acquisition geometries for tomographic reconstruction are usually densely sampled in order to keep the underlying linear system used in iterative reconstruction as well-posed as possible. While this objective is easily enforced in imaging systems with gantries, this issue is more critical for intra-operative setups using freehand-guided data sensing. This paper investigates an incremental metho...

Quantitative SPECT and planar 32P bremsstrahlung imaging for dosimetry purpose –An experimental phantom study

Background: In this study, Quantitative 32P bremsstrahlung planar and SPECT imaging and consequent dose assessment were carried out as a comprehensive phantom study to define an appropriate method for accurate Dosimetry in clinical practice. Materials and Methods: CT, planar and SPECT bremsstrahlung images of Jaszczak phantom containing a known activity of 32P were acquired. In addition, Phanto...
