Chemical Studies on Bacterial Agglutination Ii. the Identity of Precipitin and Agglutinin*
نویسنده
چکیده
Although the unit&an theory of antibodies has gained general acceptance since its formulation by Zinsser and others (l), quantitative evidence for the identity of agglutinins and precipitins has been lacking. Zinsser (2) has attempted to reconcile mathematically the apparent discrepancy between the serum dilutions in which agglutination and precipitation occur and Jones (3) has shown that collodion particles coated with egg albumin are agglutinated by small quantities of anti-egg albumin serum. Antibody concentrates, purified by Felton and Bailey (4), have been found to contain precipitins, agglutinins, opsonins, and protective antibody, but quantitative data were lacking until after the writers’ preliminary report (5). The development of quantitative micro methods for the estimation of precipitins (6, 7) and agglutinins (8) has now made it possible to investigate the quantitative correspondence of precipitin and agglutinin.

The Identity of the Mechanisms of Type-specific Agglutinin and Precipitin Reactions with Pneumococcus
THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS WHICH HAVE BEEN DESCRIBED DEMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING FACTS: 1. In the type-specific agglutination reaction, when the organisms are not present in sufficient numbers to absorb completely all the antibodies from the serum, more antibody is bound by cellular S than is required for the process of agglutination. 2. The excess of antibody thus bound can then unite with additio...
متن کاملSensitivity, specificity, and predictive value of anti-candida serum precipitin and agglutinin quantification: comparison of counterimmunoelectrophoresis and latex agglutination.
Many serological techniques have been developed to aid in the discrimination of significant candidiasis from other clinical states. Serum anti-candida precipitin and agglutinin quantification by counterimmunoelectrophoresis and latex agglutination were statistically evaluated as to their respective ability to accomplish this discrimination. Forty-five serum specimens from 16 patients with docum...
متن کاملCharacterization of the "reactant" (gamma Globulin Factor) in the F Ii Precipitin Reaction and the F Ii Tanned Sheep Cell Agglutination Test
The material in gamma globulin ("reactant") which reacts with rheumatoid sera in the F II precipitin and F II tanned sheep cell agglutination tests was concentrated by precipitation with sodium sulfate. The concentrated "reactant" appeared to consist of polydispersed molecular aggregates of gamma globulin with s(20) constants as high as 40, as well as the previously described inhomogeneous aggr...
متن کاملChemical Studies on Bacterial Agglutination
1. A method, conforming to the criteria of quantitative analytical chemistry, is described for the estimation of the agglutinin content of antisera. Examples are given of the application of the method to various antipneumococcus sera. 2. This new, absolute method is discussed with regard to its relation to the commonly used relative methods.
متن کاملIsolation of a Factor from Apple that Agglutinates Erwinia amylovora.
Extracts prepared from apple seeds contain a factor (AF) capable of agglutinating cells of Erwinia amylovora. In drop agglutination tests, AF is more active in agglutinating an avirulent, acapsular strain of E. amylovora than a virulent, capsular strain. AF precipitates in agar plates with a receptor derived from boiled cells of avirulent acapsular strain and, therefore, can be located during f...
