چکیده

Job characteristics as well as a country’s institutional setting play an important role with respect to both the age at which older workers exit and the exit pathway used. The main research question of this study is to what extent retirement behaviour is determined by differences in institutions support for early exit and the level and design of social security benefits. This will be analysed using three unique lon-running panel studies, i.e. BHPS for Britain, the GSOEP for Germany and the SEP for the Netherlands. The exit patterns of older workers are examined in these three very different countries in terms of their institutional characteristics over a decade (1990-2000). The empirical model used is a discrete time independent competing risks model. The results show that both early retirement and social security routes are most common in the Netherlands and Germany reflecting the institutional support for these exit pathways. ∗Tilburg Institute for Social and Socio-Economic Research, Tilburg University.
