چکیده

The function of the CA3 region of the hippocampus can be explained in terms of a sequence predicting recoder. For the CA3 to act as a neural prediction device, each CA3 neuron must also act as a predictor. Thus, such neurons, as prediction devices, compute something that might approximate a conditional probability. In particular, we conjecture that each neuron forecasts its own firing. Here we compare a simple neural network model, based on synaptic encoding of local conditional probabilities to an even simpler model of hippocampal region CA3 that succeeds on a variety of hippocampally dependent learning tasks. r 2004 Elsevier B.V. Plasticity-dependent, full detonation at hippocampal mossy fiber–CA3 pyramidal neuron synapses

Mossy fiber synapses on CA3 pyramidal cells are 'conditional detonators' that reliably discharge postsynaptic targets. The 'conditional' nature implies that burst activity in dentate gyrus granule cells is required for detonation. Whether single unitary excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) trigger spikes in CA3 neurons remains unknown. Mossy fiber synapses exhibit both pronounced short-te...

Effects of phenytoin on morphology and structure of hippocampal CA3 pyramidal neurons of rats in chronic stress.

AIM To investigate the effects of phenytoin (DPH) on morphological and structural changes of pyramidal neurons in hippocampal CA3 of rats induced by chronic stress. METHODS Using Nissl staining, Golgi staining, and electron microscope, the morphology and structure of pyramidal neurons in hippocampal CA3 of rats were observed. RESULTS Chronic stress resulted in loss of hippocampal CA3 pyrami...

Feedforward inhibition is randomly wired from individual granule cells onto CA3 pyramidal cells

Feedforward inhibition (FFI) between the dentate gyrus (DG) and CA3 sparsifies and shapes memory- and spatial navigation-related activities. However, our understanding of this prototypical FFI circuit lacks essential details, as the wiring of FFI is not yet mapped between individual DG granule cells (GCs) and CA3 pyramidal cells (PCs). Importantly, theoretically opposite network contributions a...

Emergence of sequence sensitivity in a hippocampal CA3-CA1 model

Recent studies have shown that place cells in the hippocampal CA1 region fire in a sequence sensitive manner. In this study we tested if hippocampal CA3 and CA1 regions can give rise to the sequence sensitivity. We used a two-layer CA3-CA1 hippocampal model that consisted of Hodgkin-Huxley style neuron models. Sequential input signals that mimicked signals projected from the entorhinal cortex g...

Ensemble Patterns of Hippocampal CA3-CA1 Neurons during Sharp Wave–Associated Population Events

Transfer of neuronal patterns from the CA3 to CA1 region was studied by simultaneous recording of neuronal ensembles in the behaving rat. A nonlinear interaction among pyramidal neurons was observed during sharp wave (SPW)-related population bursts, with stronger synchrony associated with more widespread spatial coherence. SPW bursts emerged in the CA3a-b subregions and spread to CA3c before in...
