چکیده

Hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) is one of the implants materials with medical applications due to its higher biocompatibility. The hydroxyapatite found complete utilization after proper preparation of composite. The influence of zirconia (ZrO2) on the phase composition and on mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite-zirconia composites has been previous investigated and reported. Hierarchical cluster analysis methods were applied in order to assess the similarities of four different types of hydroxyapatitezirconia composites. Four classes of composites (hydroxyapatite, hydroxyapatite coarse-grained zirconia, hydroxyapatite fine-grained zirconia, and hydroxyapatite needle-grained zirconia) cumulating a total number of sixteen experiments were analyzed. A number of nine quantitative variables were included into analysis: sintering temperature, Vickers hardness, bending strength, characteristic strength, Weibull modulus, anisotropy, Young’s modulus, rigidity modulus, and Poisson ratio. Data were analyzed using SPSS software by applying cluster analysis techniques. The analysis revealed interesting information regarding similarities between studied hydroxyapatitezirconia composites.

Tailoring the Microstructure of Sol–Gel Derived Hydroxyapatite/Zirconia Nanocrystalline Composites

In this study, we tailor the microstructure of hydroxyapatite/zirconia nanocrystalline composites by optimizing processing parameters, namely, introducing an atmosphere of water vapor during sintering in order to control the thermal stability of hydroxyapatite, and a modified sol-gel process that yields to an excellent intergranular distribution of zirconia phase dispersed intergranularly withi...

Reaction Sintering and Mechanical Properties of Hydroxyapatite–Zirconia Composites with Calcium Fluoride Additions

The effects of calcium fluoride (CaF2) additions on the densification and mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite–zirconia composites (HA–ZrO2) were investigated. When small amount of CaF2 was added, the density of the composites was markedly enhanced. The reactions of HA with CaF2, which led to the formation of fluorapatite (FA), were attributed to the observed improvements in densification. W...

Zirconia/Hydroxyapatite Composites Synthesized Via Sol-Gel: Influence of Hydroxyapatite Content and Heating on Their Biological Properties

Zirconia (ZrO₂) and zirconia-based glasses and ceramics are materials proposed for use in the dental and orthopedic fields. In this work, ZrO₂ glass was modified by adding different amounts of bioactive and biocompatible hydroxyapatite (HAp). ZrO₂/HAp composites were synthesized via the sol-gel method and heated to different temperatures to induce modifications of their chemical structure, as a...

Fabrication and characterisation of a calcium phosphate/zirconia composite

The aim of this study is to fabricate high strength calcium phosphate/ yttrium artially stabilised zirconia (Y-PSZ) composites using a simple powder pressing technique. Various compositions of hydroxyapatite and zirconia powder, ranging from 10 to 90 wt% Y-PSZ, were prepared using a wet mixing process. Ten compacts (13.5mm×3mm) were made for each composition, pressed and fired in air at sinte...

The Effect of Zirconia in Hydroxyapatite on Staphylococcus epidermidis Growth

Synthetic hydroxyapatite (HA) has been widely used and developed as the material for bone substitute in medical applications. The addition of zirconia is needed to improve the strength of hydroxyapatite as the bone substitute. One of the drawbacks in the use of biomedical materials is the occurrence of biomaterial-centred infections. The recent method of limiting the presence of microorganism o...
