[Sex hormone receptor in meningioma].

چکیده
Meningiomas have often been described as being hormone dependent because of their preponderant incidence in females with clinical manifestation during or after pregnancy. The authors have experienced three cases of meningioma which became symptomatic during pregnancy, after delivery, or during menses. Estrogen receptor protein and progesterone receptor protein of the meningioma tissue were examined in 11 cases (8 females and 3 males) including these three cases to confirm the relation between sex hormones and neoplastic proliferation. Progesterone receptor protein was found in six female cases and estrogen receptor protein was obtained from one male case. Meningioma cells of the female patients showed no estrogen receptor protein unlike previously reported. There was no case where the meningioma cells held both progesterone and estrogen receptor proteins. To explain the rapid growth of a meningioma after delivery, it was presumed that the sudden change in serum sex hormone concentration after delivery would cause a feed-back mechanism of the meningioma sex hormone receptor with subsequent cellular proliferation.

Symptomatic meningioma induced by cross-sex hormone treatment in a male-to-female transsexual.
Transsexualism is defined as a strong conviction of belonging to the opposite sex in individuals without any physical intersex condition. Cross-sex hormone therapy is an important component of medical treatment of transexuals but it is not exempt from adverse effects. We report a case of a meningioma in a male-to-female transsexual patient treated with estrogens and cyproterone acetate for the ...

Several observations suggest a hormonal influence on the growth of benign meningiomas. The female preponderance of meningioma, with a 2.2:1 female:male ratio reported during the past decade,3,10 has been used to argue that female sex steroid hormones, such as estrogens and progesterones, may stimulate meningioma growth. The putative role of female sex steroid hormones in stimulating meningioma ...
متن کاملFatty acid synthase as a novel target for meningioma therapy.
High levels of fatty acid synthase (FAS) expression have been reported in hormone receptor-positive tumors, including prostate, breast, and ovarian cancers, and its inhibition reduces tumor growth in vitro and in vivo. Similar to other hormone receptor-positive tumor types, meningiomas are progesterone receptor- and estrogen receptor-immunoreactive brain tumors. To define the role of FAS in hum...
متن کاملRisk of brain tumors associated with exposure to exogenous female sex hormones.
The etiology of brain tumors is largely unknown. Prior observations have implicated gender-specific hormones in the pathogenesis of these tumors. In a population-based case-control study, the authors identified all women aged 20-69 years who had been diagnosed with meningioma or glioma during 2000-2002 in four regions of Sweden. Controls were randomly selected from the study base. Detailed info...
متن کاملExogenous hormone use, reproductive factors, and risk of intracranial meningioma in females.
OBJECT The 2-fold higher incidence of meningioma in women compared with men has long suggested a role for hormonally mediated risk factors, but specific mechanisms remain elusive. METHODS The study included data obtained in 1127 women 29-79 years of age with intracranial meningioma diagnosed among residents of Connecticut, Massachusetts, North Carolina, the San Francisco Bay Area, and 8 Texas...
