چکیده

INTRODUCTION The upper extremities especially the shoulders are at serious risk for overuse in handrim wheelchair users. It has been shown that upper extremity complaints frequently occur within the wheelchair user population [1]. However, physical activity and an active lifestyle are important to maintain general fitness and to prevent long term health problems. Because handrim wheelchair propulsion has been shown to be an inefficient and mechanically straining form of ambulation [2], alternative propulsion mechanisms have been developed and studied. The handcycle has been proven to be an energetically more efficient and less straining alternative to the wheelchair [3]. However, the magnitude of the mechanical load of handcycling has not been subject of report. Due to the fact that the external power output needed for propulsion is produced with a considerably larger muscle mass, the mechanical load of handcycling on the upper extremity is believed to be lower.

Design and Fabrication of an Instrumented Handrim to Measure the Kinetic and Kinematic Information by the Hand of User for 3D Analysis of Manual Wheelchair Propulsion Dynamics

The repetitious nature of propelling a wheelchair has been associated with the high incidence of injury among manual wheelchair users (MWUs), mainly in the shoulder, elbow and wrist. Recent literature has found a link between handrim biomechanics and risk of injury to the upper extremity. The valid measurement of three-dimensional net joint forces and torques, however, can lead to a better unde...

Investigation of the performance of an ergonomic handrim as a pain-relieving intervention for manual wheelchair users.

Manual wheelchair users commonly experience pain in their hands and wrists associated with the repetitive stress of propulsion. The objective of this research was to examine the effect of an ergonomic wheelchair handrim as an intervention designed to reduce pain in the hands and wrists and improve functional outcomes for manual wheelchair users. Three studies were conducted to achieve this obje...

A comparison of methods to compute the point of force application in handrim wheelchair propulsion: a technical note.

Several methods are available for computing the location of the point of force application (PFA) in manual wheelchair propulsion using kinetic data. We compared five different techniques for computing the PFA location in analysis of data from five wheelchair users propelling their own wheelchairs using their normal propulsion style. The effects of the assumptions used in the calculations on the...

Effect of workload setting on propulsion technique in handrim wheelchair propulsion.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the influence of workload setting (speed at constant power, method to impose power) on the propulsion technique (i.e. force and timing characteristics) in handrim wheelchair propulsion. METHOD Twelve able-bodied men participated in this study. External forces were measured during handrim wheelchair propulsion on a motor driven treadmill at different velocities and con...

Inter-Individual Differences in the Initial 80 Minutes of Motor Learning of Handrim Wheelchair Propulsion

Handrim wheelchair propulsion is a cyclic skill that needs to be learned during rehabilitation. Yet it is unclear how inter-individual differences in motor learning impact wheelchair propulsion practice. Therefore we studied how early-identified motor learning styles in novice able-bodied participants impact the outcome of a low-intensity wheelchair-practice intervention. Over a 12-minute pre-t...
