BBN and the Primordial Abundances

چکیده

The relic abundances of the light elements synthesized during the first few minutes of the evolution of the Universe provide unique probes of cosmology and the building blocks for stellar and galactic chemical evolution, while also enabling constraints on the baryon (nucleon) density and on models of particle physics beyond the standard model. Recent WMAP analyses of the CBR temperature fluctuation spectrum, combined with other, relevant, observational data, has yielded very tight constraints on the baryon density, permitting a detailed, quantitative confrontation of the predictions of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis with the post-BBN abundances inferred from observational data. The current status of this comparison is presented, with an emphasis on the challenges to astronomy, astrophysics, particle physics, and cosmology

The BBN Manifesto

The status of big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) as a cornerstone of the hot big bang cosmology rests on the agreement between the theoretical predictions and the primordial abundances (as inferred from observational data) of the light elements deuterium (D), helium-3 (He), helium-4 (He), and lithium-7 (Li). The strength of BBN is that it is a testable theory: from its beginings in the late 1940’s,...

Neutrino Physics and the Primordial Elemental Abundances

Limits can be placed on nonstandard neutrino physics when big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) calculations employing standard neutrino physics agree with the observationally inferred primordial abundances of deuterium (D), He, He, and Li. These constraints depend most sensitively on the abundances of D and He. New observational determinations of the primordial D and/or He abundances could force revi...

Model-independent Predictions of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis

We derive constraints from standard (with Nν = 3) BBN arising solely from two cosmologically produced nuclides, He and Li, from which the extrapolation to primordial abundances is straightforward. The abundances of D and He are at present only inferred from their solar and local interstellar medium values using models of galactic chemical evolution. However, our knowledge of chemical evolution ...

Tracking the Post-bbn Evolution of Deuterium

The primordial abundance of deuterium produced during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) depends sensitively on the universal ratio of baryons to photons, an important cosmological parameter probed independently by the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation. Observations of deuterium in high-redshift, low-metallicity QSO Absorption Line Systems (QSOALS) provide a key baryometer, determining th...

Big Bang Nucleosynthesis: Consistency or Crisis?

The early hot, dense, expanding Universe was a primordial reactor in which the light nuclides D, He, He and Li were synthesized in astrophysically interesting abundances. The challenge to the standard hot big bang model (Big Bang Nucleosynthesis ≡ BBN) is the comparison between the observed and predicted abundances, the latter which depend only on the universal abundance of nucleons. The curren...

Big Bang Nucleosynthesis Calculation

I review standard big bang nucleosynthesis and some versions of nonstandard BBN. The abundances of the primordial isotopes D, He-3, and Li-7 produced in standard BBN can be calculated as a function of the baryon density with an accuracy of about 10%. For He-4 the accuracy is better than 1%. The calculated abundances agree fairly well with observations, but the baryon density of the universe can...
