Action-Sound Latency: Are Our Tools Fast Enough?

چکیده
The importance of low and consistent latency in interactive music systems is well-established. So how do commonlyused tools for creating digital musical instruments and other tangible interfaces perform in terms of latency from user action to sound output? This paper examines several common configurations where a microcontroller (e.g. Arduino) or wireless device communicates with computer-based sound generator (e.g. Max/MSP, Pd). We find that, perhaps surprisingly, almost none of the tested configurations meet generally-accepted guidelines for latency and jitter. To address this limitation, the paper presents a new embedded platform, Bela, which is capable of complex audio and sensor processing at submillisecond latency.

Testing for and Estimating Latency Effects for Poisson and Non-Poisson Spike Trains
Determining the variations in response latency of one or several neurons to a stimulus is of interest in different contexts. Two common problems concern correlating latency with a particular behavior, for example, the reaction time to a stimulus, and adjusting tools for detecting synchronization between two neurons. We use two such problems to illustrate the latency testing and estimation metho...

The IO performance of storage devices has increased by three orders of magnitude over the last five years. This is due to the emergence of solid state drives (SSDs) that wire in parallel tens of non-volatile memory chips. How can software systems keep up with this radical evolution? Commercial SSDs are black boxes, whose behavior and performance profile are largely undocumented. Today, the eval...
متن کاملEffect of Increasing System Latency on Localization of Virtual Sounds
In a virtual acoustic environment, the total system latency (TSL) refers to the time elapsed from the transduction of an event or action, such as movement of the head, until the consequences of that action cause the equivalent change in the virtual sound source. This paper reports on the impact of increasing TSL on localization accuracy when head motion is enabled. Five subjects estimated the l...
متن کاملLong-latency and voluntary responses to an arm displacement can be rapidly attenuated by perturbation offset.
Feedback control of our limbs must account for the unexpected offset of mechanical perturbations. Here we examine the evoked activity of elbow flexor and extensor muscles to torque pulses lasting 22-152 ms and how torque offset impacts activity in the long-latency (45-100 ms) and voluntary epochs (120-180 ms). For each pulse width, we found a significant attenuation of muscle activity approxima...
متن کاملAdaptive Timeout Policies for Fast Fine-Grained Power Management
Power management techniques for mobile appliances put the components of the systems into low power states to maximize battery life while minimizing the impact on the perceived performance of the devices. Static timeout policies are the stateof-the-art approach for solving power management problems. In this work, we propose adaptive timeout policies as a simple and efficient solution for fine-gr...
