A personal recollection: 60 years in thermoregulation

چکیده
This subjective essay is a personal reminiscence of my 60 y as a thermophysiologist. I recall the academic environment that I entered in the mid-50s, review our knowledge of thermoregulatory mechanisms then, and note the research that exploded in the 60s and continued through the 90s to bring us to our present state of sophistication. I conclude by mentioning some new research that may signal the future of this field. I would like to begin by thanking Dr. Andrej A. Romanovsky, editor-in-chief of this Journal, for inviting me to write a Legacy Article on any topic of my choice. Since I have been preoccupied lately with writing and editing the global history of thermophysiology for the American Physiological Society (APS), my mind has been full of reminiscences about the people I have known and the studies that have animated me over the 6o years since I entered the field. I thought it might be interesting to share some of my memories with my older (in both senses of the word) and my younger colleagues who may not be fully familiar with our past. I shall try herein to briefly review that past, reflect on the present, and attempt a preview of the future, strictly from my personal perspective. Please forgive me in advance, therefore, for my unabashed enthusiasm on the one hand and my critical biases on the other.

This year 2010 marks the 30th anniversary of smallpox eradication, as declared by the WHO Assembly in 1980. As someone who worked for this program for many years, I would like to present my recollection of how it succeeded and what lessons can be learnt, with the added benefit of hindsight. The program achieved the global unification of mankind despite differences in race, nationality, religion...

Adults described and dated two kinds of first remembrances: a personal event memory (the recollection of a personal episode that had occurred at some time in some place) and a memory fragment (an isolated memory moment having no event context and remembered, perhaps, as an image, a behavior, or an emotion). First fragment memories were judged to have originated substantially earlier in life tha...

In the learning phase, participants encoded 20 words that were presented in one of four frames on a personal computer screen. Next, in the recognition test, the participants were divided into "Remember judgment (Recollection)" or "Know judgment (Familiarity)" groups, base...
