Fluorination effects on tribological characteristics of hydrogenated amorphous carbon thin films

چکیده
The main effect of the introduction of fluorine to diamond-like carbon (FDLC) thin films is the reduction in surface free energy (SFE). Regarding tribological properties, frequent allusions to low friction are found in the literature. However, studies proving a direct relationship between fluorine content in DLC films and macroscopic friction reduction are hard to find, while others state fluorine does not affect friction significantly. The present study completes a previous one, in which we introduced fluorine leading to a reduction in SFE, and establishes which is the relationship between films’ fluorination degree and their tribological characteristics. In order to complete the study, optical emission actinometry measurements were carried out, and plasma composition results are discussed in terms of their relationship with chemical properties of the films.

Conditioning of hydrogenated amorphous carbon thin films for field emission via current stressing
The effects of electrical current stressing on the field emission characteristics of hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) thin films are reported. In these a-C:H films an initial conditioning treatment of the film is often required before the onset of stable emission and only after several voltage cycles do the values of the threshold field tend to converge. By stressing of the film by applyin...

The surfaces of the magnetic data storage hard disks used in computers are coated with a thin film of amorphous carbon and a layer of perfluoropolyalkyl ether (PFPE) lubricant. Both protect the surface of the magnetic layer from contact with the read-write head flying over the disk surface. Although the most commonly used carbon films are amorphous hydrogenated carbon, a-CH(x), it has been sugg...
