Serum L-Fucose, Total Sialic Acid and Ceruloplasmin Levels in Type II Diabetic Subjects of Somwarpet Taluk– A Preliminary Study
نویسنده
چکیده
The present study was aimed at verifying whether serum L-fucose, total sialic acid (TSA) and ceruloplasmin can be used as prognostic indicators for type II diabetes mellitus, which will help in detecting complications of diabetes at an earlier stage. Thirty confirmed type II diabetic patients and 30 non-diabetic subjects were considered for the study. Serum L-fucose, total sialic acid and ceruloplasmin were estimated by Winzler’s methods and diamine oxidase methods respectively. Serum L-fucose and TSA were significantly increased in diabetes when compared to the non diabetic control, where as ceruloplasmin was apparently increased in diabetes. Serum L-fucose, total sialic acid and ceruloplasmin can be used as prognostic indicators for type II diabetes mellitus.

Chronic Depression of Serum Sialic Acid Levels in Alloxan-induced Diabetes
This study was performed to determine whether alloxan treatment of rats alters levels of the terminal carbohydrate residues L-fucose and sialic acid of serum glycoproteins. Results indicate that in the uncompensated diabetic animal a chronic depression of serum sialic acid level occurs with no apparent alteration in the level of L-fucose. The depression in sialic acid level may be attributed in...
متن کاملSerum Levels of Sialic Acid and Neuraminidase Activity in Cardiovascular, Diabetic and Diabetic Retinopathy Patients
Background: Sialic acid is a component of serum that is elevated in diseases such as diabetes and certain malignancies. The normal range of SSA concentration and serum neuraminidase activity in different populations are varied, probably due to racial differences. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to obtain the average SSA concentration and serum neuraminidase activity, in an Iran...
متن کاملEvaluation of Serum Uric Acid and Glutathione Levels in Diabetic Patients and Healthy Subjects
Objective: It is well known that diabetes is one of the main health challenges. According to the evidence presented in recent years by investigators, serum uric acid has emerged as a possible risk factor for diabetes mellitus. The aim of the present study was to compare the mean serum uric acid and the antioxidant activity of glutathione levels in patients with diabetes and the control group. ...
متن کاملLack of association between serum sialic acid levels and retinopathy in Type 2 diabetic patients.
Sialic acid, an acetylated derivative of neuraminic acid, is reported to be a marker of micro- and macrovascular complications in diabetic subjects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of serum sialic acid and diabetic retinopathy. Serum sialic acid levels were measured in healthy non-diabetic control subjects, Type 2 diabetic patients without retinopathy (No DR), Type ...

Nitric oxide and sialic acid variables are indicators of the acute phase response. This study was planned to investigate the relationship between the level of serum nitric oxide and sialic acid in type 2 diabetes with and without nephropathy. Fasting venous blood samples were taken from 90 subjects of which 30 were of type 2 diabetic patients with nephropathy (group I), 30 type 2 diabetes witho...
