Exploiting Externalities to Estimate the Long-Term Effects of Early Childhood Deworming

چکیده

I investigate whether a school-based deworming intervention in Kenya had long-term effects on young children in the region. I exploit positive externalities from the program to estimate impacts on younger children who were not directly treated. Ten years after the intervention, I find large cognitive effects—comparable to between 0.5 and 0.8 years of schooling—for children who were less than one year old when their communities received mass deworming treatment. Because treatment was administered through schools, I also estimate effects among children whose older siblings received the treatment directly; in this subpopulation, effects are nearly twice as large. A . Detailed response to Aiken et al . ( 2015 ) pure replication

Results: “For school attendance, re-analysis showed benefits similar to those originally found in intervention schools for both children who did and did not receive deworming drugs. However, after correction of coding errors, there was little evidence of an indirect effect on school attendance amongst children in schools close to intervention schools. Combining these effects gave a total increa...

Long-term spatial and temporal variability of ambient carbon monoxide in Urmia, Iran

One of the pillars of epidemiologic research on the long-term health effects of air pollution is to estimate the chronic exposures over space and time. In this study, we aimed to measure the intra-urban ambient carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations within Urmia city in Iran, and to build a model within the geographic information system (GIS) to estimate the annual and seasonal means anywhere with...
