چکیده

A sketch of classification reasoning is given in the paper. The key ideas of the reasoning are ideas of classification and its good approximations based on good diagnostic tests. Such good tests, which are maximally redundant (GMRTs), i.e. their subsets of attributes are closed, are considered. Classification reasoning embraces two interrelated processes: inductive inferring implicative assertions based on GMRTs and using these assertions in deductive steps of reasoning. A peculiarity of our inductive model of classification reasoning is the control and transformation of subcontexts during inductive phase of reasoning by the use of deductive reasoning rules, for example the rules prohibiting some pairs of attributive values.

Machine Learning as a Commonsense Reasoning Process

One of the most important tasks in database technology is to combine the following activities: data mining or inferring knowledge from data and query processing or reasoning on acquired knowledge. The solution of this task requires a logical language with unified syntax and semantics for integrating deductive (using knowledge) and inductive (acquiring knowledge) reasoning. In this paper, we pro...

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Deductive and Inductive Form-Focused In-struction on Iranian EFL Learners' Implicit and Explicit Knowledge of Non-Generic Definite Article

This study investigated the relative effects of deductive and inductive form-focused instruction (FFI) on the acquisition of 4 non-generic definite article uses(cultural, situational, structural, and textual) as assessed by explicit and implicit outcome measures. The tests utilized to assess EFL learners' acquisition of definite article uses were timed and untimed grammaticality judgment tests....

Adaptive Logics and the Integration of Induction and Deduction

In this paper, I argue that it is typical of many scientific reasoning processes that they involve the integrated use of inductive and deductive steps. I moreover illustrate with examples from the sciences that the distinction between induction and deduction is context-dependent— an inference treated in one context as deductive may in a different context may be treated as inductive—and that the...

Investigating the Effect of Inductive and Deductive Grammar Instruction and Input Enhancement on Iranian EFL Learners’ Grammar Achievement

The present study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of deductive instruction of grammar with input enhancement and without using input enhancement. It also explored the effectiveness of inductive instruction of grammar with input enhancement and without input enhancement among Iranian EFL learners. The participants were female intermediate-level students who were studying English a...

Solving Geometry Problems Using a Combination of Symbolic and Numerical Reasoning

We describe a framework that combines deductive, numeric, and inductive reasoning to solve geometric problems. Applications include the generation of geometric models and animations, as well as problem solving in the context of intelligent tutoring systems. Our novel methodology uses (i) deductive reasoning to generate a partial program from logical constraints, (ii) numerical methods to evalua...
